To our wonderful customers,

Wishing you a happy and relaxing King's Birthday long weekend.

Our studio will be closed on Monday 5 October for the public holiday, as we take a little time with family and friends. We reopen on Tuesday 6 October and look forward to welcoming you back into the studio as the countdown to Christmas begins.

As always at this time of year, our project schedule is filling quickly. If you are planning to frame a treasured piece as a gift for someone special, we encourage you to book in soon, allowing time for design consultation, the sourcing of materials and the handcrafting of your frame.

How to capture the quiet yet exhilarating night sky, when Venus shines so brightly?

ARTSHOP's custom designed and handcrafted framing solution softly extended the midnight blue night sky with a gently sloping custom painted and waxed slip.

We also explored ancient symbols denoting Venus, adding the eight-pointed star motif in each corner and smaller versions at north, south, east and west.

We finished the composition wrapped in genuine silver leaf.

🏆 Congratulations to Nikki Tonkin, winner of the 2026 Downlands Art Exhibition Curator's Encouragement Award!

Nikki, a long-time exhibitor at DAX, has spent many years working with expressionist watercolour landscapes. This year she submitted a still life study reminiscent of the works of Giorgio Morandi, the renowned Italian painter known for his still life compositions. "I was interested in how Nikki pushed her use of a favoured medium to new boundaries and refined her style in the process," says Curator Evan Hollis.

As part of this award, Nikki will receive professional development tuition, funded by ARTSHOP, with a TAS - Toowoomba Art Society member of her choosing, to further explore her practice.

Thank you to TAS President Catherine Ketton for collaborating with us to deliver this award, and for her wonderful words on the night.

We can't wait to see where Nikki's practice takes her next.

Finally, we express our deep gratitude to the army of sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who came out to make this year's exhibition "the best yet" in the words of our Curator 😊.

🏆 And the inaugural Downlands Art 2026 ARTSHOP Prize for Artistic Presentation went to...

Toni McIsaac, for Headcase, a sculptural assemblage in wood, steel, ceramic.

Our team toured the exhibition in the days before the Gala Opening. After independently identifying works deserving recognition and then comparing our selections, the team arrived at a group of finalists.

Cherylyn Russell, our Director, sums up the Team's reaction. "Headcase stood out for the whole ARTSHOP Team," she says. "There's humour, originality and craftsmanship in how Toni's brought the subject and its elements together as a fully resolved artistic statement. It's a complete, engaging piece, and one that held our attention as we moved through the exhibition."

We also congratulate our highly commended finalists: Petra Cross, Janice Young, Robyn Henderson, Smith and Brooks, Catherine Ketton and Charlotte Simpson.

Toni's prize: a place at the UniSQ McGregor School Art Workshops, January 2027.

🏆 Introducing the ARTSHOP Prize for Artistic Presentation

We're very excited to bring a new award to this year's Downlands Art program: the ARTSHOP Prize for Artistic Presentation.

This Award recognises the winning artist's input in how their artwork is presented — the use of materials, sympathetic framing design, quality of workmanship, finesse and resolution of artistic language.

The winner of this inaugural award will receive a funded place at the 2027 University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) McGregor School Art Workshops in a stream of their choosing.

We are so grateful to the UniSQ McGregor School for being the professional development provider for this award.

ARTSHOP loves supporting artistic development. We believe talent thrives when people have safe spaces to build and explore their creativity, and we're proud to support a sector that brings so much value to our community.
