Common household electrical tasks are often mistaken for “quick DIY jobs”, but many of them legally require a licensed electrician.

So what kind of tasks are not DIY?

✔ Installing or relocating power points
✔ Replacing or installing switches
✔ Installing light fittings or ceiling fans
✔ Any work involving wiring or electrical circuits

These tasks may seem simple, but they carry serious risks if done incorrectly, from electrical shocks to fire hazards, plus potential legal and insurance issues.

To protect lives, property, and ensure compliance with Australian laws, electrical work must be carried out by a licensed electrician.

While very minor tasks (like changing a light bulb) are generally allowed, most electrical tasks are strictly licensed work due to the serious risks involved — including fire, injury, and significant legal penalties.

🔌 Electrical Work That Requires A License:

✔️ Installing, repairing, or altering any fixed wiring
✔️ Installing or replacing power points and switches
✔️ Installing light fittings, ceiling fans, or complex lighting
✔️ Creating or modifying electrical circuits
✔️ Any work connected to a home or business electrical system
✔️ Testing, certification, or compliance documentation

⚠️ Minor Tasks Generally Allowed:

✔️ Changing a light bulb
✔️ Changing a battery on a smoke alarm

⚡ It’s “just a small job”… until it’s not.

Any fixed wiring — even quick installs or minor changes — should always be handled by a licensed electrician.

Why?
❌ Fire risks
❌ Electric shock
❌ Insurance issues
❌ Non-compliance fines

Safety isn’t optional — it’s a professional responsibility.

Time for Thoughtful Thursday 😀
Did you know building work includes painting, fixing a tap or even putting an arch in your garden around your home. If the work totals over $3,300, or if is structural, or if is a regulated trade than your contractor must be licenced and you must have a regulated contract.
