Project Spotlight: Perkins Flat Road
π The Challenge:
HARO Civil Engineering was engaged to review the design of Perkins Flat Road with a primary focus on minimising dust concerns for residents. The site presented unique challenges, including the presence of very large native trees on both sides and a significant 1800mm reinforced concrete pipe culvert with hand-placed concrete, bluestone headwalls, wingwalls, and aprons.
πΌ Our Solution:
We conducted a thorough risk assessment in alignment with the Austroads Guide to Road Design. The objective was to determine the smallest safe road cross-section, considering both horizontal and vertical alignments, while giving paramount importance to minimising impact on the surrounding large native trees.
π οΈ Successful Remediation:
Converting the road into a 2-lane sealed configuration would have necessitated the removal of numerous native trees and an extension of the major culvert, requiring the removal and replacement of associated headwalls. To address this, we proposed an alternative approach that involved the preservation of the 1800mm RCP culvert. This approach required adjustments to pavement width and the implementation of a single-lane bridge treatment.
This solution not only addressed the immediate concerns but also provided a sustainable and cost-effective alternative. The project showcases the importance of balancing infrastructure development with environmental preservation, resulting in a win-win scenario for the community and the natural habitat.
π Community and Conservation:
This project exemplifies our commitment to community well-being and environmental conservation. By preserving the native trees and opting for a solution that minimises disruption to the natural habitat, we ensured a positive outcome for both residents and the environment.
