🧾 NEW QUEENSLAND HOUSING CODE 🧾
On 1 September 2026, the Queensland Development Code (QDC) mandatory parts 1.1 and 1.2 were replaced by the Queensland Housing Code (QHC).
The QDC set out standard design and siting provisions for residential buildings including houses, sheds and carports across Queensland, except where a local government included alternative provisions for specific circumstances. The QHC introduces a range of different provisions for residential building setbacks and includes new provisions including maximum internal floor areas for secondary dwellings and requirements for landscaped open space within the front yard of new dwellings.
A transitional period has been established for three years until 1 September 2029. During this time, the new provisions of the QHC will only apply in a local government area if the local government amends their planning scheme to specify how the provisions will apply. Otherwise, the QDC will continue to apply until the end of the transitional period.
Anyone considering a project with a new dwelling or secondary dwelling should contact the relevant local government to discuss when the provisions are likely to apply within their area.
