Overusing hashtags on Facebook has reduced post reach for years, but it’s now official; hashtags just aren’t needed on most platforms anymore. Algorithms rank content on far more meaningful factors these days.

At EAT Digital, we strongly recommend skipping hashtags on Facebook altogether. They tend to clutter posts and don’t provide any real performance boost.

It's official. Stop using hashtags. 😆

Ha! Okay, not exactly 100% 'official' just yet... but check this out:

Instagram, X (Twitter), and TikTok have started phasing out hashtags stating that they are no longer necessary for discovery.

And we can assume if Instagram is doing this, so is Facebook... even though there is a prompt to add hashtags to every post. So maybe it's early days yet for FB.

Truth is, the hashtag was a tool created BY the people, FOR the people.

Now all the social networks are 'taking back control' of content distribution.

Their AI-powered algorithm simply analyzes ALL other aspects of your post, the caption, your bio, etc. etc. The algos handle discovery for you. I guess it makes sense now, eh?

How to spot a scam
The post originates from non-official platforms like buy /sell/ swap groups or sketchy websites.
Lack of contact details like phone numbers, agency names, or any legitimate contact point.
Comments are often disabled on these posts to prevent the public from questioning their authenticity.

Additional Verification Tips:
Check Official Sources 👮‍♂️: Always look for confirmation from reputable sources such as local police departments, news outlets, or official community alert systems.
Be Wary of Urgency 🚨: Scammers often create a sense of urgency to provoke immediate action. Genuine appeals will encourage verification through official channels.

Look for Detailed Information 📄: Authentic posts will usually have detailed information that can be verified, such as contact numbers or specific details about the missing person or pet.

Scammer Tactics:
Scammers might initially gain sympathy and shares with a genuine-seeming post and then alter the images and text to promote a scam, such as fundraising or collecting personal information.

Action Steps:
DELETE the post from your newsfeed.

WordPress Vulnerability Warning: Update your WordPress website today!

URGENT: If you own a WordPress website, it's strongly recommended that you update to the latest version as soon as possible. Multiple security vulnerabilities have been discovered, including one which could allow any user or customer with a basic website account to potentially create a security risk for your website.

Always remember to update your WordPress version, themes, and plugins regularly, both to optimise performance and lower security risk.

Look out for scams like this one that are NOT affiliated with the real ChatGPT; the page has 49,000 followers, but the website is spelt incorrect, the page is new, and the link tries to download a file to your computer.

As with all new things, there are many scammers taking advantage of the new technology to rip people off.
