A timely reminder.
Queensland mineral mine and quarry workers’ exposure to respiratory hazards such as dusts (e.g. silica), welding fumes and diesel particulates can lead to lung diseases.
These include pneumoconioses (e.g. silicosis and siderosis), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (e.g. chronic bronchitis and emphysema) and lung cancer.
By 1 September 2022, mineral mine and quarry workers must have a lung health check completed. This is the site senior executive’s responsibility and paid for by the employer. Penalties may apply for failure to meet these requirements.
The medical examination includes:
- a chest examination
- a dual-read chest X-ray
- spirometry
- other examinations deemed necessary by the doctor (e.g. CT scan).
A list of doctors is available online.
