A timely reminder.

Queensland mineral mine and quarry workers’ exposure to respiratory hazards such as dusts (e.g. silica), welding fumes and diesel particulates can lead to lung diseases.

These include pneumoconioses (e.g. silicosis and siderosis), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (e.g. chronic bronchitis and emphysema) and lung cancer.

By 1 September 2022, mineral mine and quarry workers must have a lung health check completed. This is the site senior executive’s responsibility and paid for by the employer. Penalties may apply for failure to meet these requirements.

The medical examination includes:
- a chest examination
- a dual-read chest X-ray
- spirometry
- other examinations deemed necessary by the doctor (e.g. CT scan).

A list of doctors is available online.

5 Sticks are proud to be gold sponsors of this event, hope to see you there!

Many of our North Queensland colleagues will be attending – and presenting – at the forthcoming North Queensland 2022 Safety & Health Conference, set to be held in Townsville on Friday 17 June.

The event will be co-hosted by RSHQ and the Institute of Quarrying Australia and will deliver a forum to focus on safety and health issues affecting the quarrying and mining sectors and best practice around workplace procedures and policy.

As well as welcoming a number of valuable speakers – including Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health, Kate Du Preez, - Heart of Australia's mobile health unit will be open for inspection to showcase its revolutionary technology.

Woohoo, the boys went undefeated at their home carnival yesterday and were team of the carnival for their age group!
Well done boys, very proud of you!

Congratulations to all the junior teams that won Team of the Carnival at this years Bobby Hagger Junior Carnival, we hope everyone had a great time and we look forward to seeing everyone next year.

Our first thank you must go to Bob Hagger, we love you and love everything you do for the club. Thank you for having the fields perfect for everyone, you're one of kind😀

We would also like to thank the clubs that supported the carnival along with our hard working committee members and volunteers who made the day a special event for so many children. A special thank you to a few people that have no association with football but volunteered their time - Mitchell Francisco Mary Leech Allyson Buchanan and Nikita Ball.

One last thank you to Audi Centre Townsville for their sponsorship this year along with Three Loaves Bakehouse for their kind donation.

Photos from the day will be posted soon.....

The risk of silicosis exists in many industries. This is an interesting piece on the tunneling sector.

“In recent years silicosis has been synonymous with engineered stone in kitchens. But in other industries like tunnelling, thousands more workers are in danger of developing this deadly dust disease. https://t.co/wGE3bY9Cbw”
