Being a great business owner doesn't automatically make you a great leader.

This week, Claire Wilson, Owner & Master Franchisor of The Alternative Board Australia, shared her insights at the National Franchise Convention in Canberra, exploring leadership development and the challenges of leading through influence.

One of the key themes? Leadership requires more than experience. It requires self-awareness, a willingness to learn and the ability to adapt.

For business owners, that can mean stepping away from the day-to-day, listening to different perspectives and being open to having your thinking challenged.

It's one of the reasons peer advisory boards can be so powerful.

No replaying that difficult conversation. No worrying about cash flow. No second guessing the decision you made that afternoon. No staring at the ceiling wondering if you’re heading in the right direction.

There is so much going on in the world today, economic shifts, global disruption and even here at home we have the challenges of the economic crisis. We see it all through the 24/7 news cycles and digital media. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless with the relentlessness of it all.

I'm reminded of Jim Rohn (legendary entrepreneur, author & motivational speaker) and his core philosophy that "your life is determined by your personal philosophy and not the economy".

1. The same ill wind blows on us all "it's the set you sail" (thoughts, habits and responses), that determines where you will land.

2. Guard you mind - Jim cautioned, if you don't guard your mind the weeds of negativity will move in and take away everything of value.

Ultimately, rising above the chaos means choosing personal responsibility over external blame and realising that while you can't control the world, you have full authority over how you build yourself and respond.
