How are you encouraging children to explore and connect with nature? 🌿

Under NQA3 – Physical Environment, thoughtfully planned learning spaces provide opportunities for children to explore, investigate and engage with the natural world.

We love this example from Gumleaf Gully Childcare, where recycled materials and natural resources have been used to create a wonderful Bug Hotel!

Take a moment to reflect:
🌿 Are children involved in creating and contributing to their learning spaces?

🌿 Are natural and recycled materials incorporated into everyday experiences?

🌿 Do your environments encourage curiosity, discovery and respect for living things?

Practice Tip: Involve children in designing and maintaining their learning spaces. Their ideas and contributions can create meaningful opportunities for investigation, responsibility and ongoing learning.

💚 STRUGGLING TO FIND THE RIGHT QUESTIONS FOR CRITICAL REFLECTION? 💚

Sometimes the hardest part of critical reflection is knowing where to start and what questions to ask to get your team thinking beyond what they already do.

As we continue our October focus on NQA 3 Physical Environment, we thought we'd share a little look inside our Critical Reflection – The Holistic Way, Version 3.

For example, when reflecting on Standard 3.1 Design, you might ask:

💭 How do we consider the sensory and mobility needs of individual children when arranging our spaces?
💭 What feedback have children given us about the spaces they like or avoid, and how have we responded?
💭 Are the changes we make to our environments based on observations and evidence, or simply our own preferences?

And these are just a few of the questions included for Standard 3.1.

What’s in your sensory tray this week?

This week’s inspiration comes from the Educational Leader at Evolution Mooloolaba. She is truly passionate about sensory trays and the learning they open up for children.

As we continue our focus on NQA 3 Physical Environment, take a closer look at how sensory play is offered in your indoor and outdoor spaces.

A sensory tray is so much more than something to keep hands busy. When children scoop, pour, squeeze, sort, bury and discover, they are building:
✅ Fine motor strength and coordination
✅ Language, as they describe what they can feel, see, hear and smell
✅ Early maths and science concepts like volume, texture, sinking and floating
✅ Self-regulation, because calm, repetitive play helps settle the body and mind
✅ Social skills, through sharing space, tools and ideas with friends

Need some ideas to get started?
🌊 Ocean: blue-tinted water, shells, smooth stones, scoops and sieves
🌱 Garden: soil, seed pods, leaves, small pots, tweezers and spoons
🚧 Construction site: pebbles or sand, small trucks, timber offcuts and cups
🥣 Mud kitchen: soil, water, bark, bowls, wooden spoons and old pots
🍂 Nature walk: bark, gumnuts, leaves, feathers and magnifying glasses
🧊 Ice discovery: leaves and flowers frozen in ice, with warm water and pipettes

But it isn’t only about what goes in the tray. Take a look and consider:
✅ Can children access the tray independently and add their own materials?
✅ Are there tools that invite scooping, pouring, transferring and investigating?
✅ Is the tray at a height and in a space where children can stay and explore?
✅ Have we considered supervision, choking hazards and allergies when choosing materials?
✅ Are we observing what children do and using this to plan the next tray?

This week, set up one sensory tray using materials you already have and watch what the children do with it.
What do they notice? What do they ask? And where could their ideas take the next tray?

WHAT DOES EXCEEDING LOOK LIKE FOR STANDARD 3.2?

Last week we shared a little look inside our Pathways to Exceeding Self-Assessment Tool Book for Standard 3.1 Design.

This week, we're moving into Standard 3.2 Use and looking at how the environment is actually being used to support children's exploration, play, learning and participation.

💚 What does Embedded Practice actually look like?
💚 What could we be critically reflecting on?
💚 And how can families and community influence practice, rather than simply being kept informed?

Our Pathways to Exceeding resource breaks each Standard down across the three Exceeding Themes and provides practical Evidence in Action examples to get your team thinking.

For Standard 3.2, this could include:

✅️ Planning and changing environments with children
✅️ Reviewing how children are actually using resources and spaces
✅️ Reflecting on who is engaging, who isn't and why
✅️ Considering challenge, risk and children's confidence in physical play
✅️ Embedding sustainability into everyday practice

💚 What are your environments inviting children to explore? 💚

As we continue our focus on NQA 3 Physical Environment, take a closer look at the resources available within your indoor and outdoor spaces.
Are we providing children with resources that have one purpose, or materials they can explore, combine, move, investigate and use in their own way?

Natural materials and loose parts can create so many possibilities for children. Think timber pieces, stones, shells, leaves, seed pods, fabric, recycled materials and everyday objects that encourage children to use their imagination and develop their own ideas.

But it isn't only about what we provide.
Think about how those resources are presented and whether children can actually access them independently. Take a look around your environment and consider:

✅️ Are natural materials and loose parts available for children to explore?
✅️ Are resources displayed where children can see, reach and choose them independently?
✅️ Are they presented in a way that sparks curiosity rather than telling children exactly what to do?
✅️ Can children move resources between spaces and combine them in different ways?
✅️ Are we observing what children actually do with the materials and using this to guide what we offer next?

Sometimes strengthening an environment doesn't mean buying anything new. It might simply mean looking differently at what you already have, how you present it and how much freedom children have to use it.

This week, choose one area of your environment and look at it through the eyes of a child.
What can I see? What can I reach? What can I choose? And what could I create with it?

💚 Come with us as we take a look inside our Pathways to Exceeding resource 💚

As we kick off our October focus on Quality Area 3 Physical Environment, we thought it was the perfect time to share a little taster from our Pathways to Exceeding Self-Assessment Tool book.

One of the questions we often hear when talking about Exceeding is: "But what does that actually look like in practice?” And that is exactly what this resource is designed to help with.

For example in Standard 3.1 Design, we provide practical evidence in action examples to get your team thinking about what is already happening within your service and where there may be opportunities to strengthen practice.

This might include things like:

✅️ Reviewing your indoor and outdoor environments with children’s voices

💚 From NQA2 to NQA3 – children leading change

As we wrap up our September focus on Quality Area 2 Children’s Health and Safety and move into Quality Area 3 Physical Environment during October we love this example from Citipointe Pine Rivers.

Their Children’s Council recently completed a Sustainability Audit and identified water wastage in the bathrooms as something they wanted to improve.

The children:

💚 Developed water-saving messages and signs
💚 Chose where the signs should be displayed
💚 Discussed how they could save water while still washing their hands properly
💚 Reviewed the service’s Hand Washing Policy with educators

During the review, the children identified an opportunity to turn the tap off while rubbing their hands with soap before turning it back on to rinse.

Their proposed change has now been taken to the Service Director for review and follow-up.

What a great example of children identifying an issue, contributing to the solution and influencing service practice while connecting health, hygiene, sustainability and the environment.

When children identify something that could be improved in your service, what happens next?

Are children’s voices part of your risk assessments?

With NQA2, Children’s Health and Safety as our Focus of the Month, we’re encouraging services to think about how children can be actively involved in identifying and understanding risk.

Children often notice things that adults may not.

Ask them:
✔️ Where do you feel safe?
✔️ Is there anywhere you don’t feel safe?
✔️ What could we change to make this safer?
✔️ How can we keep ourselves and our friends safe?

Their ideas can give us a completely different perspective and help inform our risk assessments, supervision practices and everyday decisions.

💡 Practice Tip: Take your next risk assessment to the children. Walk through the space together, listen to what they notice and document their ideas.

Children’s voice shouldn’t just be captured in the program, it can be an important part of how we create safer services too.

💚 As September comes to a close, take a moment to look back at what your Focus of the Month work on Quality Area 2 has revealed.

What did your compliance checks, room observations and team conversations show you? What did children and families tell you? And where did a small change make a difference to children’s health, safety or wellbeing?

Bring those findings together with your team. Celebrate the practices that have grown stronger, identify anything that still needs attention, and add the actions and progress to your Quality Improvement Plan. Your QIP is a place to show the thinking behind the changes you make and what happens next.
