✨ How amazing is it to see a children’s idea come to life! ✨

Inspired by the magic of Vivid and their 2026 lid collection project, the children at Big Bear Academy have transformed recycled lids into a beautiful and meaningful sustainable art project.

This project is a wonderful example of children as capable and creative learners—exploring sustainability, expressing their ideas through art, and seeing how everyday materials can be repurposed into something extraordinary.

A huge congratulations to the team at Big Bear Academy for supporting children’s voices, creativity and environmental responsibility through such an engaging project. Big Bear Academy St Andrewss

💚 What would children include in an Educator Code of Conduct?

As part of their Children's Council discussions this month, the children at Brady Bunch Early Learning Centre Kawungan explored Quality Area 4 – Staffing Arrangements and shared their thoughts about the qualities they value most in educators.

The children spoke about educators being:

✅️ Kind
✅️ Caring
✅️ Helpful
✅️ Fun
✅️ Supportive

They talked about the ways educators help them feel safe, respected, confident, and supported throughout their day.

Rather than simply gathering children's feedback, the service took the next step and used the children's ideas to develop a hard-copy Educator Code of Conduct written by the Children's Council.

What a powerful way to demonstrate that children's voices matter.

When children are genuinely listened to and their ideas influence decision-making, they develop a stronger sense of belonging, agency, and connection to their service community.

Sometimes the most meaningful quality improvement work begins with a simple question:

"What do children think?"

Congratulations to the team at Brady Bunch Early Learning Centre Kawungan for creating authentic opportunities for children to contribute to conversations about the people, relationships, and practices that matter most to them.

At HMC, we support services to create meaningful opportunities for children's voices to inform decision-making, quality improvement, leadership practices, and everyday service operations.

As part of our June focus on NQA 4 – Staffing Arrangements, it is worth reflecting on a simple question:

Is your team thriving or just surviving?

Strong staffing arrangements are about much more than meeting ratios and qualifications. They are built through:

✅ consistent leadership
✅ educator wellbeing
✅ mentoring and professional growth
✅ clear communication
✅ protected time for collaboration
✅ trust, accountability, and shared expectations

When these things are missing, services often experience increased turnover, low morale, inconsistent practice, and educators simply trying to get through the day.

Our HMC 17 Ways to Make Your Team Thrive NOT Survive factsheet shares practical strategies leaders can implement to strengthen team culture, build consistency, and support educator wellbeing.

If you are looking for practical ways to strengthen your team culture and leadership practices, HMC can support you.

How are you making your educators visible within your service?

Under QA4 – Staffing Arrangements, creating a sense of belonging extends beyond children and families—it includes the educators who make a difference every day.

We love this example from Strawberry Bush Early Learning, where children have drawn portraits of their educators and displayed them for all to see.

✨ Celebrates the unique relationships between children and educators
✨ Helps children recognise and connect with the adults who support them
✨ Promotes a strong sense of belonging and community
✨ Makes educator contributions visible through the eyes of the children

Sometimes the most meaningful displays aren't the most complicated—they are the ones that genuinely reflect the people who make up your service community.

🤎 The Benefits of Clay

How inviting is this space? ✨

Did you know clay offers so many benefits for children under 5?

* Strengthens fine motor skills and hand muscles
* Encourages creativity and imagination
* Supports problem-solving and critical thinking
* Builds concentration and persistence
* Promotes communication and collaboration
* Provides a calming sensory experience

In the Reggio Emilia approach, clay is valued as a powerful way for children to express their ideas, theories and thinking.

“What the hands do, the mind remembers.” — Reggio Emilia

Sometimes the richest learning experiences come from the simplest invitations. A table, some clay and the opportunity to create, explore and wonder.

🌟 Capturing Children's Voices in Educator Appraisals 🌟

How often do we ask children what they think makes a great educator?

At Nambour Early Learning Centre, the team recently flipped the traditional staff appraisal process on its head by inviting the children to become part of the conversation. Through their Children's Council, children were asked questions such as:

💜 What makes a great educator?
💜 What do great educators say?
💜 What questions would you ask a great educator?

The responses were both heart warming and insightful:

✨ "They teach us to be kind."
✨ "You are safe."
✨ "Giving good cuddles."
✨ "Making the day fun."
✨ "Can you read books?"
✨ "Do you give good cuddles?"

What stood out most was how clearly children identified the qualities that matter most to them—kindness, safety, connection, fun, and genuine relationships.

This is a beautiful example of Quality Area 4 and Quality Area 5 coming together, where children's voices are not only heard but actively used to inform reflective practice, educator growth, and staff appraisal processes. By involving children in discussions about educator strengths and qualities, services gain valuable insight into the impact educators have on children's everyday experiences.

👏 A huge shoutout to the incredible team at Nambour Early Learning Centre for embracing innovative ways to capture children's perspectives and ensuring their voices help shape continuous improvement.

How are you showcasing the professionals behind your service?

Under QA4 – Staffing Arrangements, it's not just about qualifications and rostering. It's about building a culture where educators feel valued, respected, and connected to the service community.

Simple displays can make a powerful impact:
✨ Staff photographs and profiles
✨ Educator philosophies and aspirations
✨ Children's portraits of their educators
✨ Celebrating educator experience, strengths, and contributions

These displays help children build a sense of familiarity, support family connections, and recognise the incredible people who contribute to children's learning every day.

✨ Friday Leadership Reflection ✨

As we head into the weekend, here’s something to think about…

Are your staff appraisals simply measuring performance, or are they helping educators grow?

The most effective appraisals are linked to your current National Quality Area focus, encouraging educators to reflect on their impact, identify strengths, and set meaningful goals for continuous improvement.

And while you’re gathering feedback, don’t forget one of your most valuable sources of insight…

✨ Your Children’s Council ✨

Ask children:
🌱 What makes a great educator?
🌱 What helps you feel safe and happy?
🌱 What would you like educators to do more of?

Children’s voices can provide powerful insights that help shape professional growth, service improvement, and stronger outcomes for everyone.

As leaders, let’s ensure our appraisal processes are not just about looking back—but also about planning where we want to go next.

🌟 Tuesday Inspo

As we unpack NQA4 this month, let's take a moment to look beyond qualifications, Blue Cards, and Working With Children Checks as simply compliance requirements and start thinking about how they contribute to creating a truly child-safe culture.

I wanted to share some incredible work happening at My Kindy Labrador around the principles and practices of the Child Safe Standards.

As the team continues to explore child safety through their Children's Council, they have started reflecting on the role of the Blue Card system and asking some powerful questions:

* Do children know what a Blue Card is?
* Do they understand its purpose?
* How can we help children understand the systems and processes that are in place to keep them safe?

The Children's Council is now exploring the idea of developing Children's Blue Cards for its service.

This is a great opportunity to look beyond compliance and start challenging children, educators, families, and other stakeholders with some big reflective questions.

Most importantly... have fun with it! 😊

How do you support your educators to grow, reflect, and succeed?

Under QA4 – Staffing Arrangements, high-quality services recognise that professional growth doesn't happen by chance—it happens through intentional reflection, feedback, and ongoing development.

Available on the Holistic Hub, our Guide to Staff Appraisals Booklet supports leaders to conduct meaningful appraisal conversations that go beyond a compliance exercise.

The booklet supports services to:
✨ Foster reflective practice and continuous improvement
✨ Recognise educator strengths and achievements
✨ Identify professional learning and career development opportunities
✨ Strengthen communication and shared expectations across the team

Because when educators feel supported, valued, and empowered to grow, positive outcomes follow for children, families, and the wider service community.
