We asked Peter what he’d look at if he was buying solar for his own home. 👇
⚡ 1. Your electricity usage
Your electricity bill tells us how much power you’re using, but when you’re using it is just as important.
Are you home during the day? Is most of your power used at night? Do you have a pool, air con, electric hot water, a bore pump or an EV? Are there things coming in the future that might change your usage?
Two homes can have almost identical electricity bills and need completely different solar systems.
So before recommending a system size, we’d want to understand how you actually use electricity.
📋 2. Understand the quote
What panels are being used? What inverter? What warranties apply? Is monitoring included? Does the switchboard need any work? Are there additional costs that could come up? And who do you call if something stops working?
👷 3. Who is actually installing it?
The company selling you the system and the people who turn up to install it aren’t necessarily the same people.
Ask: Are they employees or subcontractors? Who supervises the installation? Who is responsible for the workmanship? And if something goes wrong later, who are you calling?
Panels and inverters matter, but so does the quality of the installation. Good equipment doesn’t make up for poor workmanship.
🏠 4. What will it look like?
Where will the panels sit? Where will the inverter go? If you’re adding a battery, where will that be installed?
🤔 5. What would you install?
Ask the person quoting your system:
“If this was your house and your money, what would you install and why?”
Maybe you don’t need the biggest system. Maybe spending extra on the premium option won’t actually benefit you. Maybe a battery makes sense. Maybe it doesn’t. Maybe there’s somewhere else your money would be better spent.
Whatever the recommendation is, they should be able to explain why it makes sense for you.
