The Australian hairdressing community has lost one of it's best last week. As a young apprentice Alyson quickly became an inspiration to me. I only spoke to her briefly once at Hair Expo but followed her work for my entire career.

Once a shining star in our industry - now a shining star in heaven.

Let’s be honest.

The hairdressing industry can be incredibly disconnected.

We compare. We compete. We protect our ideas, our clients and sometimes even ourselves.

Salon owners feel misunderstood by employees.
Employees feel undervalued by salon owners.
Home hairdressers can feel forgotten.
Sole traders can feel as though they have to figure everything out alone.

But I don’t believe we’re the problem.

I believe disconnection is the problem.

Because when we actually sit down together, without titles, brands, sales pitches or agendas, we discover that we are far more alike than we are different.

We understand the pressure.
The physical toll.
The emotional load.
The difficult clients.
The cancellations.
The self-doubt.
The joy of making someone feel beautiful.
And the strange, wonderful experience of building a life behind the chair.

The answer isn’t more competition.

It’s better connection.
More honest conversations.
More generosity.
And an industry that genuinely supports its own.

Hairdressers deserve an industry that cares for the person behind the chair as much as the person sitting in it.

This is part of why I created Off The Floor.

Not to sell you something.
Not to teach you how to run your business.
Not to convince you to work a certain way.

Just to bring hairdressers together - and develop the culture between us, one conversation at a time.

So, what actually happens at Off The Floor?

Honestly? We get together.

We have something to eat, grab a drink, have a laugh and get to know other people from our local hairdressing community.

There won’t be a formal presentation.

There won’t be product education.

There won’t be a business pitch or someone waiting to sell you something.

And you don’t need to arrive with a polished elevator speech - because, dear God, nobody needs that on a Monday night. 😂

This first gathering is about connection.

It’s about meeting the hairdressers working in commercial salons, home salons, mobile businesses and freelance roles throughout our region.

It’s about creating the kinds of conversations that don’t always happen when we’re busy working behind the chair.

You can come alone.

You don’t need to know anyone.

You don’t need to be a salon owner or have years of experience.

Apprentices, employees, freelancers, mobile hairdressers, home salon owners and salon owners are all welcome.

Come exactly as you are.

You’ve already got something in common with everyone in the room: you’re part of this industry, and you belong.

I’ve been in the hairdressing industry for more than 33 years.
​
I’ve worked behind the chair, owned salons, educated hairdressers, worked backstage and on stage, styled more brides than I could possibly count and experienced this industry from many different angles.
​
And I still bloody love it.
​
I love the creativity, the transformation, the conversations and the incredible people who make up our industry.
​
But I also know how much hairdressers give.
​
We spend our days helping other people feel seen, heard, cared for and confident.
​
We listen. We reassure. We problem-solve. We create. We hold space.
​
And then we go home carrying the physical, mental and emotional weight of it all - often without anyone asking how *we’re* doing.
​
That’s why I’m creating 𝐎𝐟𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐫.
​
A place for hairdressers to step out from behind the chair and connect with people who genuinely understand the work, the pressure, the joy and the reality of our industry.
​
Not an education night.
​
Not a sales pitch.
​
Not awkward networking or people trying to impress each other.
​
Just good people, honest conversation and genuine connection.
​
Because the people who spend their lives caring for others deserve somewhere they feel seen and supported too.
