When we first met Pete, he was just getting into beekeeping with two wooden hives. Since then he's started driving our truck, and his setup has grown to 10 hives with plans to keep going.

The Nuplas gear really stands out in the paddock.

A couple of hives is all it takes to get going.

First week of spring and the bees are on the move.

Almond pollination's done, so we loaded up and brought the hives out onto the canola. Mild morning, paddock in full flower, and the bees straight onto it.

From here the year opens right up. Longer days, more forage, and a proper run into honey season.

Good way to start spring.

Beekeeping isn't what it was a few seasons ago.

With varroa now across the eastern states, we're all spending more time in our hives — more checks, more handling, more work. And that work is hard on timber. It warps, it swells, and when disease turns up, it sometimes can't be saved.

Plastic holds up differently. No assembly, no wiring — coat with wax and go. It won't warp or rot, and it scrapes back clean to go again.

We'll be straight with you: a frame won't manage mites for you. But it'll stand up to the work that does.

Almond season's on, and so are we. Our bees are out in the orchards doing their bit, and back at the factory we've got gear heading off to beekeepers around the country.

If the blossom's brought you our way, come and say hello. Have a look at what we make, talk hives, grab what you need.

We're at 2 Westbrook Road, Swan Hill, open weekdays 8am - 5pm.

Every beekeeper started somewhere. Usually with a lot of questions.

If this is the year you get into bees, the best time to sort it out is now - not the week the nucs arrive. And the good news is it's simpler than it looks. Our plastic hives don't need painting, sanding or repairing, so you're not spending your weekends maintaining gear - you're just keeping bees. That's what makes them perfect for hobbyists.

Thinking about your first hive? Drop your questions below, or send us a message - we're always happy to talk a beginner through it.
