Was a pleasure to sponsor the Lions Club of Brisbane Vietnamese to support their Charter Night to fundraise for QLD Diabetes. Learn more about prevention and treatment of diabetes: https://www.facebook.com/DiabetesQueensland/?timeline_context_item_type=intro_card_work&timeline_context_item_source=100011870190252&pnref=lhc

There are moments at Diabetes Queensland that we have to pinch ourselves. Can people really be this good?
The answer to that question is “YES”, and it’s proved to us many times in the course of our work.
Members of the Lions Club of Brisbane Vietnamese Page, formed earlier this month, gave up their lunch hours to visit the Diabetes Queensland offices today after presenting us with their first fundraising cheque.
We will make sure that the generous $5,005 donation will be put to good use to help who are living with diabetes.
Peter Ho, Sonny Huynh, James Huy Vuong (founding president), Helen Huynh and Danh Nguyen met with Diabetes Queensland CEO Michelle Trute today. Lions Club International has chosen diabetes as one of their challenges worldwide, and the Vietnamese Lions Club showed today they are living the Lions’ motto of “We Serve”.
“We’ve formed to create unity through service to the community,” James said. “This club will provide a link between past and future generations of Vietnamese people and our ambition to serve the wider community.”
Diabetes Queensland and its members are truly grateful.
One of Diabetes Queensland’s credentialled diabetes educators, Michelle Tong, gave a diabetes presentation at the club’s inaugural meeting on Saturday, November 4, to more than 250 guests.
If you’d like to learn more about the club, there’s a meeting tonight at the Kim Khanh restaurant at Darra between 7pm-8pm.

Proposed changes to tax deductions for investment properties.

As part of the 2017-18 Budget, the Government recently released exposure draft legislation and accompanying explanatory material that proposes amendments that would disallow travel expense deductions in connection with residential investment properties and limit the depreciation deductions that can be made for plant and equipment used in connection with residential investment properties.

Pursuant to the changes, travel expenditure relating to residential investment properties (whether utilised for the purposes of inspecting or maintaining the property) will no longer be tax deductible. However, the changes do not prevent the ability of investors to engage third parties (real estate agents, for example) from providing property management services for investment properties, which will remain deductible. The changes also propose that the Government will limit the plant and equipment depreciation deductions for plant and equipment (generally including fixtures such as dishwashers and ceiling fans) for investors of residential properties to only include assets not previously used. Any plant and equipment items used or installed in residential investment properties as of 9 May 2017 (or acquired under contracts pursuant to the same deadline) will continue to give rise to deductions for depreciation until either the investor no longer owns that asset or it reaches its effective expiration.

Public consultation on the exposure draft legislation and explanatory material is open for four (4) weeks, ending on Thursday 20 August 2017. Stakeholders are encouraged to make submissions by electronic submission or via post.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding your tax rights and obligations as a property investor, feel free to contact our office.

Today is R U OK day. Dedicated to remind people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, "R U OK?", in a meaningful way, because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a difference to anyone who might be struggling. With law professionals having one of the highest depression and su***de rates in Australia compared to other professionals, it is very important to us here at Asset Lawyers to ask this question regularly.

Some simple pitfalls of DIY Will kits. Other obvious issues are ambiguous drafting of the Will can lead to disputes between beneficiaries and lack of control of appointment of the executor.

http://www.smh.com.au/money/planning/avoid-pitfalls-of-a-diy-will-20120403-1w9vx.html

The growing use of DIY will kits, now more readily available online, is causing concern at a time when the relatively wealthy baby boomer generation start to pass on their assets, or what's left of them.
