A well deserved love letter to the Stanley Pub, one of the (not so secret) secrets of the North East.

An 1854 country pub, now in the hands of women with very good taste. They’ve already hosted Ch*****ne and oyster tastings, live music and crime podcast nights, with plenty more ideas in the works.

Then there’s the pub itself: a glorious red duck curry, plenty of local w**e and even a bustling little cafe serving a baklava cheesecake I remain emotionally attached to.

So this one goes a little deeper: into the women behind it, the town around it, and how an old country pub became something far bigger than a place for a drink.

My father Henning passed last night, many of you saw him out back at Valhalla on the basket press in vintage, in cellar door, planning the next cover crop or alternative farming possibilities, dreaming about new tractors, but most often on his beloved ride on mower. He loved visiting and getting the place tidy again.
It was his love of w**e that inspired me to drop into this industry at such an early age.
He was always pushing me to be passionate about the w**es we produce and to strive for excellence. He loved farm life and supported us at Valhalla in many ways and we will miss him deeply. If you get the chance, raise a glass in his honour!

So, Valhalla won’t be popping up this long weekend! However, if you are in Rutherglen, please visit the old Wicked Virgin site as a new era starts.
Joe & Alexandra Perry have taken over the vineyard & olive grove and are breathing new life into this place ad Hopetoun Grove.

They are popping up as a one weekend taster as they are still completing their renovations of the recent purchase.
Great to see another quality olive oil and farm produce venue in Rutherglen!

A small taste of what’s to come…

We’re opening the gates for one weekend only with our freshly pressed olive oil and a selection of great w**es.

After the long weekend, we’ll be closing again while we continue preparing Hopetoun Grove for its official reopening.
