🏡 Could reducing stamp duty unlock more homes for Australian families?
Did you know that an estimated 13 million bedrooms sit empty every night across Australia? One of the biggest reasons is that many older Australians who would happily move to a smaller home simply can't justify the enormous cost of doing so.
For many downsizers, stamp duty is the single biggest financial barrier. After working hard to pay off their family home, they're often faced with paying tens of thousands of dollars in tax just to move into a property that better suits their lifestyle.
If stamp duty for older Australians was reduced—or even abolished—it could:
✅ Free up larger family homes for growing families.
✅ Make downsizing more affordable.
✅ Help ease housing supply pressures.
✅ Improve quality of life for retirees wanting a more manageable home.
💬 What do you think?
Should older Australians be exempt from stamp duty when downsizing, or is the current system fair? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
