Someone needs to call for help. Someone may need to begin CPR. Someone needs to locate the AED.

Bike rides, playgrounds, beach days, sleepovers, backyard adventures and plenty of “watch this!” moments.

Most of the time it's all good fun. But when a child does get hurt or suddenly becomes unwell, it's easy to feel unsure about what to do next.

Our Infant & Child First Aid Information Course is made for parents, carers, grandparents, family members and anyone who regularly looks after little ones.

Quick question. When did you last open your first aid kit?

Not because somebody was hurt. Just to check what was actually in there.

It's one of those jobs that's easy to forget until you suddenly need something.

This week, give yours a quick check. Replace anything that's been used, look at expiry dates, make sure sterile items are still sealed and check that everyone at home or work knows where the kit is kept.

And while you're there, ask yourself another question.

Would you know how to use what's inside?

Having the supplies is a great start. Having the skills to go with them is even better.

Most emergencies don't give you time to prepare first.

They happen in the kitchen, on the footy field, at work, at the beach or during an ordinary day at home.

That's why World First Aid Day isn't really about ticking a box. It's a reminder of how useful these skills can be in everyday life.

You don't need to be a healthcare professional to learn first aid. You just need to be willing to learn what to do when someone needs help.
