Thank you EHA (WA) for the opportunity to present at the 76th EHA (WA) State Conference’s Food Safety Masterclass Session at the Westin Hotel in Perth this week.

My session ā€˜Mastering Approvals of Food Safety Plans’ was aimed at improving the skills and knowledge of Environmental Health Officers responsible for assessing Food Safety Plans and help them understand the requirements of Food Safety Standard 3.2.1.

The 3-Day Conference was also a great opportunity to meet new Environmental Health professionals, re-connect with old colleagues, reminisce about our Curtin Uni days and have a lot of laughs.

Do Childcare Centres in Australia need to comply with the new Standard 3.2.2A of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code?

THEY SURE DO !!!

In Standard 3.2.2A, Childcare Centres are classed as a CATEGORY ONE food business as they process and serve unpackaged, potentially hazardous, ready-to-eat food meals such as spaghetti bolognaise, fried rice and cottage pie.

The standard requires Childcare Centres to implement all of the three new food safety management tools.

This includes:

1. Nominating at least one staff member as a food safety supervisor,

2. Ensuring all food handling staff complete basic food

3 Maintain temperature monitoring records and demonstrate control of food safety hazards

All Childcare Centres in Australia will have until 8 December 2023 to comply with this new standard.

Do Childcare Centres in Western Australian need to comply with the new Food Safety Code Standard 3.2.2A? 🤷

They sure do!!! āœ…

In the new Standard 3.2.2A, Childcare Centres are classed as a category one business as they process and serve unpackaged, potentially hazardous, ready-to-eat food.

Food prepared for children at Childcare Centres are generally meals containing meat, rice and pasta, that are immediately served for consumption šŸ„˜šŸššŸ

Because the food is directly handled by Childcare Cooks, exposure to contamination by harmful bacteria and other food safety hazards before it is served

The Standard requires Childcare Centres to implement all of the three new food safety management tools. This includes nominating at least one staff member as a food safety supervisor, food safety training for all food handling staff and substantiation of particular food safety controls e.g. temperature monitoring records and procedures.

All Childcare Centres in Western Australia should already comply with 2 of the 3 food safety management tools (e.g. food handling training and records/procedures) as this would already be a requirement as part of their Food Safety Program.

Most however, will need to nominate a food safety supervisor at their Centre. This most likely will be the Centre Manager or the Cook (or both). Childcare Centres.

They will have until 8 December 2023 to comply with this new Standard.

Do you work in a food business and feeling sick today 🤢🤢🤢

In Australia, food handlers have a legal responsibility under the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code Chapter 3 to tell their supervisor of any infection or condition that might make food unsafe or unsuitable for people to eat.

If you have any of the symptoms of foodborne illness, such as fever, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea, or if you have any infected cuts or sores, you should NOT handle, prepare or serve food.
