The thing about being in business for yourself is that you spend A LOT of time thinking about your business. Here's me doing just that!

The list of thought bubbles includes
(in no particular order and most are applicable to me)

Cash flow - in and out (but mostly out!)
BAS/GST/PAYG(I)/PAYG(W)/Superannuation
Insurances
Legals
Schedule management
HR ... always HR ... so much HR
Recruitment
Vision, mission, strategic planning and direction setting
Risk assessment and management
Contingency and or succession planning
Reporting (internal and external)
Systems and efficiencies (or the lack of them)
Regulatory compliance (the never-ending overburden)
Continuing education of self and staff
Internal performance and conformance
Competition
Growth and or expansion
Marketing
Advertising
Branding
Website (associated functionality and usability)
Security (physical and cyber)
Podcast (how to, where, topics etc)
Educational info and blog posts topics
Socials - Insta/FB/LinkedIn (aka The Cerberus)

Somewhere in the middle of all of that is the need to consider yourself and your family.

It is so easy to go down a rabbit hole at the expense of everything and everyone.

What you can do, you do, what you can't you outsource - where you can.

And sometimes even if you think you can DIY it, outsource it anyway, because simply put, you can only stretch yourself or your business so far until something breaks.

There is no place for DIY in business - thank you for that gem!

Even Lost Digits has it's own specialised help, because I can't do everything.

But I still think about it ... all. the. time!!!

Is the course to steer clear? Do you know if you're on track or not - can you see the sector lights, that enable safe transit, clearly? Do you have the necessary key elements of control in place to ensure you don't end up running aground or on the rocks? What risks might you face coming into harbour? Navigation in sailing and shipping are an excellent analogy for tactical, operational and strategic business operations.

At Lost Digits, we understand that navigating the governance of your allied health or medical practice can seem daunting, especially when you’re balancing day-to-day operations with long-term strategy. That’s why we’re here to help businesses at every stage—from startups to established practices—to build strong governance frameworks.

Governance might seem like something only larger companies need, but setting up a solid framework early on can be a game-changer. Start-ups often face fast-paced growth, uncertainty, and shifting priorities, so having the right systems and strategies in place from the beginning ensures smoother decision-making, risk management, and financial controls.

Lost Digits offers key services that support your governance development, including:

Setting up governance structures to guide decision-making, accountability, and leadership roles.

Establishing financial controls, such as authorities, chart of accounts, and systems to help manage cash flow, budgeting, and bookkeeping that supports both management and financial accounting from day one.

Creating strategic and business plans that align with your vision and mission, making sure you have a roadmap to follow as your business evolves and grows.

Risk management to identify and mitigate early-stage risks before they impact your growth, as well as contingency planning.

Compliance assistance to ensure you meet the myriad of regulatory requirements in Australia.

By providing these services, Lost Digits helps you to build a strong foundation, empowering you and your practice to establish, develop and grow sustainably.

So tell me, in the comments, what your governance systems look like? What plans are currently in operation in your business?

What on earth does a lighthouse have to do with a Chart of Accounts?

Read on and find out!

A chart of accounts (COA) is essentially the backbone of your financial system and it is a critical component of your financial management system that helps you to navigate your business and can literally prevent you from running aground. It lights the way. And guides the course to steer.

It’s a list that organises all your business’s accounts into different categories, like assets, liabilities, income, and expenses. Imagine it as a detailed map of where money is flowing in and out of your business.

What does it do? It helps you track every financial transaction in an organized way. For example, when you make a sale, pay a bill, or buy equipment, the COA categorizes these transactions so that they appear in your financial reports—things like your balance sheet or profit and loss statement and, in most, if not all financial software systems, they, categorise and direct your transactions to, and in, your Business Activity Statement.

Getting this right is absolutely crucial to enable compliance and the smooth facilitation of your monthly or quarterly BAS returns!

Why is it important to keep it up to date? Well, an up-to-date COA ensures that your financial reports are accurate and reflect the true state of your business.

If it’s outdated or poorly maintained, you might miscategorise expenses or miss important financial insights, which can lead to bad decisions or even, as mentioned a moment ago, compliance issues.

In short, the chart of accounts provides clarity, accuracy, and a solid foundation for managing your finances and making informed business decisions. Keeping it updated is crucial to the health and growth of your business!

So what does your COA look like?
