Mineral Exploration - December 2025 Quarterly Results 📊

New data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals a Gold boom that lights up exploration!

Today’s release of the ABS September 2025 quarterly data for mineral exploration and expenditure has revealed a 45% growth in gold exploration over the past twelve months. Gold exploration across Australia rose 7.2% to $431.5 million over the June quarter 2025 ($402.5M) and significantly over the September quarter 2024 ($297.5M), led by greater activity in New South Wales and South Australia.

AMEC Chief Executive Warren Pearce noted, “Gold has proven itself to be an outstanding and resilient performer in maintaining explorer interest, buoyed obviously by recent gold price highs and the continuing uncertainties seen in global markets."

There's a new land rush in Australia and it's not gold this time.

From mining and farming to the booming renewables sector, everyone wants a piece of the same pie. But overlapping approvals and lack of coordination are costing us productivity, investment, and jobs.

We’ve just commissioned a new national report by Modifying Factors, released this week, on how better coexistence could unlock Australia’s full potential.

New report points to coexistence lifting productivity 📑

A national report released today by Modifying Factors calls for a national policy to address the rising tensions between renewable projects and the mining and agricultural industries.

The rapid expansion of renewables has seen the banking of large parcels of land, often with no guarantees of development. This results in locking out the established sectors and potentially steralising the land for future use.

AMEC Chief Executive Warren Pearce said, “Our exploration and mining companies don’t have that luxury. If you’re not making progress, you lose your ground. Use it or lose it."

“This is not about stopping renewables. It’s about making sure all projects, across all sectors, follow the same fair process, so we can get on with building a productive future."

“It’s time to level the playing field."

The report identifies a clear objective to deal with the issue: a co-ordinated national policy response, to turn this emerging crisis into an opportunity for co-operation.

Report author Geoff Deans said, "Complex problems need to be defined and framed. Our research demonstrates there is a real opportunity to transition from the mindset of exclusivity to productivity."

Land is fundamental to Australia’s commerce, culture, and community. It feeds us, powers us, and sustains entire regions. But the current approach is leading to congestion, conflict, and costly delays.

Resounding win by Labor ensures critical minerals initiatives will proceed🤝

AMEC congratulates Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Australian Labor Party on their 2025 Federal Election victory.

With a strong mandate secured, it’s time to deliver on key policies that support Australia’s minerals industry and our global energy future.

✅ $7B Critical Minerals Production Tax Incentive
✅ $1.2B Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve
✅ Real consultation on Nature Positive laws
✅ Continuation of the Junior Minerals Exploration Incentive (JMEI)

“We are ready and willing to work constructively with the returned Albanese Government to deliver the minerals and metals critical to Australia’s prosperity and the global energy transition,” said AMEC Chief Executive Warren Pearce.

"It's time to back our explorers and secure Australia's role as a global critical minerals leader."

More support needed for minerals exploration in Australia.

Today’s Federal Budget 2025-26 announcement has missed an opportunity to demonstrate support for the minerals exploration industry.

AMEC has been calling on the Australian Government to extend the JMEI after it reached its conclusion, when the final year of allocations were awarded to companies in June 2024 for the FY 2024-25.

Chief Executive Officer, Warren Pearce said, “After eight years of a successful program, we’ve been working with the government to evolve the incentive to be even more impactful.

“We are expecting that both major parties will address measures in the upcoming election to support the exploration sector in Australia, because without exploration you can’t find the mines of the future.

“The JMEI is a proven program that supports junior exploration companies and is a substantial contributor to Australia’s economy and government revenue."

AMEC congratulates Premier Roger Cook and the Western Australian Labor Party, after being successfully re-elected for a third consecutive term.

Chief Executive Warren Pearce said, “AMEC will continue to work with the Cook Labor Government on a range of initiatives relevant to the resource industry.”

These commitments include the Governments ‘Made in WA’ plans and the ongoing energy transition, both of which require a strong exploration and minerals sector to play major roles.

AMEC looks forward to continuing its advocacy for our members and key stakeholders.

Mineral Exploration - December 2024 Quarterly Results 📉

New data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) today reveals a concerning drop in mineral expenditure and drilling on greenfields deposits.

Annual expenditure for the 2024 calendar year is down 7.3 per cent (or $312M) to $3.95B, compared to the previous 12 months. With exploration recording a 2.4 per cent ($24.4M) drop in original terms to $992.3M, compared to the September quarter 2024.

AMEC Chief Executive Warren Pearce noted, “Activity in almost all jurisdictions was lower compared with the previous corresponding and calendar year periods. The ABS data helps illustrate the industry is still facing considerable headwinds."

“The trends are undeniable, and the sustained challenges we face are increasingly borne out by the data. The economic imperative around the importance of this industry is well understood by the State and Federal governments."

"However, it will not be possible to develop and secure our critical minerals opportunities or ensure a Future Made in Australia without a concerted effort and commitment from all our industry stakeholders.”

NEW POLL 📊

A poll by Painted Dog Research and commissioned by AMEC, reveals the majority of West Australians support lifting the ban on uranium mining.

57% of respondents said 'Yes' to lifting the ban put in place in 2017. A previous industry poll from 2023 showed at 49% supported uranium mining.

AMEC Chief Executive Warren Pearce said, “What this poll demonstrates, is that West Australians can see the value in uranium mining for our economy and our state."

“It also points to a community understanding that WA is a mining state, with the professionalism and skill to deal with uranium mining in a safe and responsible way."

Mr Pearce also called on WA Labor to "Reconsider the current ban and move with the times.”

The poll comes at time of strong global demand for uranium, fuelled in large part by the global push for decarbonised energy and emissions reduction, the current policy position, from eight years ago, no longer makes any sense.
