Tuesday Top Tip 💡 Do you need to keep receipts for business purchases under $75?

Not necessarily, but that does not mean you should screw up the receipt and throw it away.

For GST purposes, a formal tax invoice is generally not required for purchases of $82.50 or less including GST. However, you still need sufficient records showing what you purchased, how much it cost and that it was a genuine business expense.

A bank transaction by itself may not always be enough, particularly if it does not show what was purchased. Other supporting records could include an invoice, purchase order, electronic receipt or a clear photo of the original receipt.

Our advice? Keep or photograph the receipt whenever possible. Good records make bookkeeping, GST reporting and any future questions much easier to manage.

Business lunch? Don’t assume it’s claimable.

Just because you talked about business over lunch doesn’t automatically mean the expense can be claimed.

Client lunches, café meetings and meals with suppliers may be treated differently depending on the purpose, who attended and whether it falls under entertainment.

If you do have a business-related meal, make sure you keep clear records, including:

✔️ The receipt or tax invoice
✔️ Who attended
✔️ The business purpose of the meeting
✔️ The date and location
✔️ Whether it was staff, clients or suppliers
✔️ Whether alcohol was included

Good records make it much easier for your bookkeeper or accountant to review the expense correctly.
