Has anyone ever heard of the W**e Dog books? The man who started it (Craig McGill) used to enjoy going to w**eries and always noticed that there was a dog around the place. I’m not really sure why, or how it happened, but it’s just this unspeakable rule that a dog is always just somewhere on the property, or cellar door.

This was my little Lou. She may have only been 6kg, but she acted like a real cattle dog. She would chase after tennis balls, birds, critters. She was only a princess lapdog if it was the time for it, but her preference was always the vineyard.

I’d love to know the history of how this happened, but I’m sure you’ve noticed it too. The W**e Dogs is a bit of a cult hit, and now he does W**e Dogs overseas, W**e CATS, and I even spotted a cellar door pig in the most recent edition

Always testing and tasting. Whatever goes into the bottle is seriously analyzed. We keep an eye on it even to the point where the truck comes to pick it up, we keep a hold back sample from the tank, sample from the truck, and again once it arrives, and then when it goes into the tank while it waits to go into bottle. A standard w**e analysis covers, pH, TA (titratable acidity, different from pH), sulphur levels, oxygen, carbon dioxide, alcohol. These all have to match. If I can’t physically be with the w**e on the truck, then seeing the results ensures that I know what is going into the bottle was exactly what I had on the tasting bench before

I’ve met a lot of viticulturists, and technically, I could do another 4 or so subjects at university to be qualified (they are two totally separate degrees!), but the knowledge of the people that I have met over the years, starts this young. Most grew up on a farm or vineyard. Knowing what nutrients are needed, yeah we do test for them these days, but are almost like an instinct. I wonder if my little ones will start subconsciously noticing when the seasons change, or find their instinct for when the grapes are ripe

I don’t know if I could physically do this anymore. That is HARD work. All the empty skins after fermentation need to be removed, and whilst there are vessels that are really well designed with a slope to just scoop and let gravity do its thing, when it’s vintage and grapes are just coming in on their own schedule you have to make do…

I promise you I’m not slacking! W**es are “asleep” - they’re just going about their business and I’m allowed to leave them alone without having Mum guilt....

I know this is a w**emaking site, but I have to show you the best thing I’ve ever done. We had a small break to Komodo Islands with the family and saw the dragons. Is this interesting? Hahah, I wasn’t sure! But, I have wanted to do this since I was a little kid and so I’m showing everyone I know (literally strangers on the street photos...)

Will be back to do more trials, bottling will start soon for the whites as they’re basically done!

How is everyone going? I would say I’ve done a bucket list item, but this wasn’t even a bucket list, this was THE only item I ever wanted to do. Tell me yours!!

It’s a bit pedantic, but samples are taken from every barrel, every tank, every vessel just to ensure that across the board they all taste the same. W**e is a science, but sometimes not an exact science, especially if you consider my wild ferment Chardonnay. Sometimes there IS just slight barrel differences, sometimes you can barely tell, and after a day of tasting you drive yourself crazy! But, it has to be done to keep the quality control in check, and make sure that everything is going smoothly

I love this time of year. The sunsets are gorgeous, and we’re getting the odd nice night. It’s a quieter time, bottling some of the reds from last year, The Rose is sugar dry! So now I just look after them, make sure nothing goes wrong and wait until they’re ready to bottle
