🍀 Organic viticulture in full flight
The vines are dormant, but winter's actually one of the most active seasons in organic viticulture.
Right now, the wild soursobs are doing their job, outcompeting w**ds and building a natural w**d mat for spring. Their timing is perfect: they soak up water over winter while the vines are asleep, then die back in summer just as the vines start needing that water most.
We also plant cover crops in alternate rows each year, giving half the vineyard rich nutrients and zero compaction while still allowing us to tend the vines.
What we plant changes depending on what the soil needs that season. Once mown or crimped, it forms a natural mulch that holds moisture and keeps the soil cool through summer.
It’s using the dormant season to prepare for next year’s successful vintage.
