Little Wattlebird,
(Anthochaera chrysoptera)
These guys are reasonably common in these parts, however I’ve not had one in front of the Nikon for a long time. Always a good thing to get a clean shot.

Major Mitchell's Cockatoo
(Lophochroa leadbeateri)
On a recent trip to Googs track, I was hoping for some excellent birding and particularly to see Malleefowl. The week before we left, I got excited when I saw a group on the Facebook forum who traveled the track and had scored some excellent footage of two Malleefowl on the track… and on an iPhone… doh!
Anyhow the short and curly’s… we saw nothing for to entire time on Googs track. However as luck would have it, just a few k’s out of Kingoonya, this guy was sitting on a small dead tree just off the dusty road, happily munching on a Paddy Melon. I’ve had a Major Mitchell’s on my list for quite some time, so this was a real treat.

Rainbow Lorikeet,
(Trichoglossus moluccanus)
A flowering gum just near home has the attention of several species of birds, not to mention the bees. Everyone is very busy lapping up the nectar and not too many squabble’s either.

Striated Thornbill,
(Acanthiza lineata)
These little guys are so cool. I found a small group feeding in some eucalyptus. They are so fast and great to watch as the buzz around sometimes comically and hanging off the leave tips for searching for insects.

Australian Reed Warbler, (Acrocephalus australis)
Very happy to get a clean pic of the Reed Warbler. They are very common however they seem always to be just out of sight within the thick reeds. As this guy landed on the plant, a cloud of pollen was released that just seemed to hang for ages.

I photographed this pigeon as it was about to land on the ground.
In that moment I couldn’t help but notice the upward feathers on the top of the wings that help to disrupt the air flow over them. It’s a very similar system used in aviation that you have probably noticed. The air brake flaps pop up, increasing drag which intern helps stop the plane.

I’ve been quite intrigued of late with the postures that birds take on as they prepare to land. Water, ground or trees require very different procedures.
This male Australian Wood duck is approaching a tree branch landing so has taken on more of a vertical stance.

I call it…Duck Breathe.
It’s been so cold around here the last few days that each time this duck ‘quacked’ a swirl of warm vapour was visible.
