So often, people think copywriting is just about being able to string a sentence together. Being a 'wordsmith' is a word often used, isn't it? Or people often associate it with formulaic sales copy.

I've never resonated with either of those ideas. In my experience, the most important skill of copywriting is being able to have emotional empathy.

Taking the time to understand people and how they feel and respecting those feelings, is integral to how I work.

So if you've worked with me before, you'll know I spend a lot of time asking questions before we kick off a project. And then, we jump on a Zoom to chat more. That's not just because I'm nosy, or like to have a chat (well, perhaps this is part of it, ha ha!) 😁 And, it's not just because I need to have all the facts right.

What I'm really hoping for, is to find the insight that's going to help me understand you, and your customer.

Ultimately, to be able to put myself in their shoes,...and understand how they feel.

Not sure who needs to see this...

For anyone who feels like they should have been marketing better, like they should have it all figured out by now.

For those who feel too late to the party. Who feel like they’ve missed their chance - that everything’s ‘done’ already.

That they will never catch up to where they could have been if they had just been brave and willing to be a beginner and done the thing when they first thought of it...

Whether that’s content marketing...or emails...or social media...or whatever else you wish you’d done to support your business more fully.

It’s never too late to make a change in the direction you wanted to.

To start speaking up for yourself, your business, your clients, your product, your service...and your values.

What I also know, is that there has never been a better time to be more authentically you in a business sense.

And the world can always benefit from a unique point of view.

So what’s stopping you? Go for it!

Hi, I'm Lisa Brewster ✋ For the past 10 years or so, I've been a content marketer and copywriter for Australian businesses. If you’re new around here, you’re meeting me at a special time in my life.

You see, up to now, I have created very little of my own content. Part of the reason was content fatigue. I was spent on creating for others and didn't have much juice left for creating my own stuff. But it was also more than that. It was also about not being ready to take up space. Maybe one day I'd get brave, and then I'd disappear for months. ⁠

Not claiming that space meant I was missing the golden opportunity of being a living example of what consistent content creation could be. So now, I'm playing catch up. In a slow and steady way. ⁠

I'm treating this like a marathon, not a sprint. (Even though I very much want to race off to the end 😂 )

I believe that until we can trust ourselves to be the person who shows up regularly, we shouldn't worry about what we 'know' about marketing. There is so much noise out there about the best way to do something. And you know what? Too many should dos and could dos just get in the way of the important task of learning from experience. It's like, the more we know, the more we know we don't know. ⁠Ammi right?⁠

Showing up is much more important than being smart, strategic or savvy about it. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what we know we're supposed to do if we're not doing any of it because we're afraid of making a mistake!!!⁠

So go easy on yourself, and just build the muscle of being the person who commits to themselves and shows up for themselves. If that's putting out less than perfect stuff, less often, then so be it. ⁠

You know that the thing in between you and your business growth is marketing yourself. But how oh how do you get it all done??? ⁠

Well, my loves. If you are already showing up regularly (and you want to increase that) you might like to consider producing an editorial calendar and being more strategic in theming, batching, repurposing or recycling content (more on that later).⁠

BUT if you aren't showing up consistently now (e.g. you connect every day for a week and then crickets for 6 months) there may be something else going on...⁠

Is that you? 🙋🏻 I was guilty of it too. ⁠

Okay....so I'm calling BS on needing any more 'info' in order to create your content. It might not be anything external that needs your attention. It might be your internal mindset that needs help first.⁠

So, step away from that 12-part course, close down the calendar template...and go check out my article (it's in my bio). The ideas may be the most liberating you've pondered in a long time. I know they were for me. ⁠

It is not selfish to carve out time to market yourself. Your unique voice matters, and we do want to hear it. By showing up for yourself, you show up for your clients with an open heart. Sharing more of yourself and your expertise can help others in ways you never thought possible. ⁠

Stuff we might try to hide because we consider them ‘failings’ in a business sense…

Inconsistency, lack of boundaries, not sticking to plans, lack of self-belief, lack of courage, feeling behind, feeling like we don’t know enough, feeling overwhelmed!

Fear around facing this often stops us from showing up, sharing and growing our businesses.

But what about if there’s this other side to all those things?

What about if we looked at our failings with a bit more love and compassion? Kinda like how we parent toddlers?

We can’t shy away from the tantrums. But maybe being a bit kinder to ourselves and our shadow sides will allow them to grow into our strengths?

A uniqueness we embrace in our communications and approach that in the end becomes what makes our businesses special and authentic?

I believe good content marketing is about giving our audience something real. Something of ourselves that people can connect to. Good content is that just as much as it is about education, product awareness, brand, search optimisation or anything else. ⁠
