Last Friday the iAccelerate team had a great time attending the sold-out Illawarra Business Awards, and were so pleased to see so many iAccelerate current companies, alumni and partners celebrated.

Massive congratulations to current resident Gravity winning the Excellence in Sustainability Award for their development of innovative gravitational energy storage technology. And the one and only Jones for her highly commended Outstanding Employee Award.

We'd also like to congratulate for receiving awards for Employer of Choice, Excellence in Innovation and Excellence in Large Business, as well as Sprout Scientific for winning Excellence in Small Business. Congratulations also to Consulting, who were finalists in the Excellence in Small Business and Employer of Choice categories.

It was great to see so many outstanding local businesses recognised for the incredible work they're doing for the community and beyond. An unreal night spent surrounded by like-minded innovators and entrepreneurs - we're already looking forward to next year's event!

After 15 years working in the corporate world, Talita and her husband made the leap to start their own business together, with iAccelerate as their very first experience in the accelerator world.

The iAccelerate Experience: 🚀 iAccelerate helped Talita and her husband raise their first angel investor funding — a pivotal early win for the business. As first-time founders, they went on to explore other accelerators and incubators internationally, including Techstars in the United States, giving Talita a unique perspective on how ecosystems differ: in the US, she found programs often assume founders already have entrepreneurial experience, while iAccelerate embraced her as someone completely new to the startup world. That made all the difference — she credits the framework, resources, cohort of peers, and especially the mentors and guidance for how much she got out of the program. 🤝

📚 Accelerate Alumni - Alfred Chidembo - Aussie Books for Zim

Alfred Chidembo is the founder of Aussie Books for Zim, an Australian-registered charity that rescues books destined for Australian landfills and delivers them to disadvantaged communities in Zimbabwe — many of them where children have little or no access to books.

The Business: 🌍
Aussie Books for Zim started small, with just 2,000 books, and has since grown to rescuing and delivering over 200,000 books to communities in need. The mission is personal for Alfred, who grew up in one of the disadvantaged communities the charity now serves, without access to books himself.

The iAccelerate Experience: 💡
Alfred's journey with iAccelerate began in 2015, when he and his friend Robert Gorkin pitched at the staff pitching awards and won a scholarship. As scientists with no background in building a social enterprise, they had to learn everything from scratch — how to pitch an idea, how to build a strategic plan, and how to grow something from the ground up. Looking back, Alfred describes iAccelerate as "the wind beneath our wings," giving them the community and peer network they needed to learn alongside others on a similar journey.

Where They Are Now:📈
What began as a small book drive has, at times, felt more like running a logistics company — but the growth has been matched by real impact. The journey has had its share of challenges and disappointments along the way, but Alfred says the reward comes down to one thing: putting a book in the hands of a child and seeing the joy it brings.
