R U OK? starts with a conversation - but creating a psychologically safe workplace takes more than asking the question once a year.

Employers have a responsibility to identify and manage psychosocial hazards at work, while also creating a culture where people feel safe to speak up, check in with each other and ask, โ€œAre you OK?โ€

Sometimes, those conversations can feel uncomfortable. Thatโ€™s exactly why they matter.

This R U OK? Day, here are four ways to make meaningful check-ins part of your workplace culture:

๐ŸŸก Pick the right moment. Choose a safe, private and relaxed setting where you can give the conversation the time it deserves.

๐ŸŸก Listen without judgement. Give the person space to talk. You donโ€™t need to have all the answers - sometimes being heard is the most important thing.

๐ŸŸก Encourage action. You donโ€™t have to fix the problem. Encourage them to connect with the right support, whether thatโ€™s a trusted person, GP or mental health professional.

๐ŸŸก Follow up. A genuine check-in shouldnโ€™t end with one conversation. Following up shows that you care and that support is ongoing.

Psychosocial hazards can be difficult to see, but they can have a significant impact on peopleโ€™s health, wellbeing and safety.

R U OK? Day is a great reminder to start the conversation - but a psychologically safe workplace is built every day.

This September, Awareness Co. turns 9. ๐ŸŽ‰ But our story started long before the business did. It started on 2 January 2001, when two young women met on their first day as Financial Services Trainees at a local credit union in Wollongong.

We had no idea that day would lead to more than 25 years of friendship, shared careers and eventually Awareness Co.

Long before we became consultants, we were working inside organisations โ€” navigating change, supporting leaders, managing competing priorities and regularly asking each other:

โ€œWhat would you do?โ€

Looking back, we realise something important.

We were our ideal clients.

For our 9th birthday month, weโ€™re sharing the story behind Awareness Co. in two parts.

Part 1 is about where it really began - and the experiences that eventually made us ask:

โ€œWhat if we did this ourselves?โ€

This month, weโ€™re celebrating ๐ŸŽ‰ 9 incredible years of Awareness Co. ๐ŸŽ‰
Throughout the month, weโ€™ll be sharing stories, milestones and memories from the journey so far. But thereโ€™s a little more to the storyโ€ฆ

Because our story started 16 years earlier! ๐Ÿ‘€

Before Awareness Co. had a name, there were two young women sitting nervously in a Wollongong credit union, waiting to start their first day of work.

It was 2 January 2001.
Anna was 18.
Kristy was 21.

Neither of them could have imagined that first day would mark the beginning of a friendship, professional partnership and, eventually, a business.

Over the years, their careers took them through HR, organisational change, leadership, employee consultation, workplace wellbeing and business transformation.

They worked with executives.
Supported leaders.
Sat alongside employees.
Navigated restructures.
Managed competing priorities.
Had difficult conversations.

And somewhere along the way, they started asking a different question:

โ€œWhat if we did this ourselves?โ€

So in 2017, Awareness Co. was born.

Nine years later, we're celebrating where we've come from, what we've learned and the people who have been part of the journey.
Because every business has an origin story.
Ours started with two women, a shared belief and a whole lot of courage.

๐๐„๐– ๐๐‹๐Ž๐† ๐๐Ž๐’๐“ โœ๏ธ AI is changing the way we work - but are we designing that change well? ๐Ÿค–AI can create huge opportunities for productivity, innovation and better decision-making. But if weโ€™re not careful, efficiency gains can also lead to work intensification, higher demands, reduced autonomy and new psychosocial risks.

The question isnโ€™t simply โ€œWhat can AI do?โ€

Itโ€™s โ€œWhat is AI doing to the human experience of work?โ€

Good AI implementation means designing work around people - involving workers in the conversation, protecting human judgement and ensuring productivity gains actually create better work, not just more of it.

We explore what leaders should be considering when designing AI-enabled work, from workload and autonomy to consultation, capability and psychosocial safety.

To effectively meet evolving Work Health & Safety obligations, organisations increasingly need access to a blended skillset - combining psychosocial risk management, organisational design, stakeholder engagement, leadership influence and workplace wellbeing expertise. ๐Ÿคนโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคน๐Ÿคนโ€โ™‚๏ธ

The challenge is that professionals who can genuinely integrate safety thinking into broader organisational strategy are still relatively rare.

Rather than relying on finding one person who can do it all, organisations are turning to integrated support models that bridge the gap between HR, Safety, Wellbeing and Leadership.

Our team works alongside organisations to deliver practical, people-focused solutions that support psychosocial safety, strengthen workplace culture, and help leaders confidently navigate changing WHS expectations.

Because creating safer, healthier workplaces takes more than compliance alone - it takes collaboration, capability and the right support.

Missed our last webinar, โ€œDifferent Brains, Different Risks: Designing Psychosocially Safe Workplaces for Neurodivergent Mindsโ€ with Eleanor Hayman?

There were so many valuable insights and practical ideas shared, and one of the biggest takeaways was:

When workplaces are designed with all brains in mind, teams become not only safer and more inclusive, but often more engaged and productive too.

And the good news - creating meaningful change doesnโ€™t have to be overwhelming or complicated. Small, thoughtful adjustments can make a significant difference.

If your organisation had a psychological injury claim tomorrow, what evidence could you put on the table?

We recently asked this question, and it clearly struck a chord.

It's become even more relevant following an important change in NSW.

From 1 July, the Managing Psychosocial Hazards at Work Code of Practice became legally enforceable, marking a significant shift from guidance to an enforceable benchmark for managing psychosocial risks.

For many organisations, this isn't about starting from scratch. It's about being able to demonstrate a systematic approach.

Could you show evidence that you've:

โœ”๏ธ Identified psychosocial hazards?
โœ”๏ธ Consulted with workers?
โœ”๏ธ Assessed and prioritised risks?
โœ”๏ธ Implemented effective control measures?
โœ”๏ธ Reviewed whether those controls are working?

To help, we've developed a Psychosocial Risk Management Evidence Checklist - a practical resource designed to help HR, WHS and business leaders assess whether they have the evidence needed to demonstrate a systematic approach and identify opportunities to strengthen it.

Helping organisations move from good intentions to evidence-based psychosocial risk management.
