A spectacular perspective of marine pilotage operations in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, captured from the air by Capt. John Lynch of Marine Services Western Australia Pilots.

A significant milestone for marine pilotage in Australia.

Captain Josephine Clark, President of Australasian Marine Pilots Institute (AMPI), and Hamish Findlay, CEO of Aspeq, have signed a landmark agreement between the Australasian Marine Pilots Institute (AMPI) and ASPEQ to establish a professional entrance examination for marine pilotage.

The examination will provide a consistent, rigorous and professionally recognised pathway for assessing the knowledge and competencies required to enter the marine pilot profession.

This is an important step towards strengthening professional standards, supporting consistency across jurisdictions and ensuring the next generation of marine pilots are assessed against robust national benchmarks.

AMPI looks forward to working with ASPEQ to deliver this important initiative for the future of pilotage in Australia and the wider region.

With the 2026 Es**rt Towage Workshop now less than a month away, places are filling quickly.

Day 1 Plenary – Limited spaces remaining

Join us at NOAH'S on the beach for a full day of presentations and discussion covering the operational, technical, legal and human factors shaping es**rt towage.

Day 2 Svitzer Workshops – FULL
Our practical simulator workshops at Svitzer Australia Newcastle are now at capacity. A waitlist is available should places become available.

Day 2 Industry Tour – Limited spaces remaining
Day 1 delegates who are not attending the Svitzer workshops can alternatively join our industry tour, including visits to Port Ash and the Wärtsilä simulator at Tighes Hill TAFE.

NEW: Towage Workshop | Day 2 Industry Tour – Limited Places Available

We’re pleased to announce an additional Industry Tour on Thursday, 5 November for delegates who are currently only attending Day 1 of the AMPI Es**rt Towage Workshop in Newcastle.

The tour will include a visit to Port Ash for a behind-the-scenes tour and lunch, followed by a visit to Tighes Hill TAFE to explore the Wärtsilä simulator facilities.

Bus transport will be provided throughout the day, departing from and returning to Noah’s on the Beach.

Places are strictly limited and we expect this to sell out early, so we recommend registering now if you are interested in this tour.

SAVE THE DATE | VICTORIA 2027

The Australasian Marine Pilots Institute is pleased to announce the 2027 Australasian Maritime Operations Conference, taking place in Geelong, Victoria from 11–14 October 2027.

Building on the success of previous AMPI events, the conference is growing to a 2.5-day program, complemented by dedicated half-day workshops, bringing together marine pilots, harbourmasters, port management and VTS professionals.

We’re also excited to be hosting the conference at the brand-new Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre.

The mental and physical strain marine pilots are exposed to

Marine pilotage demands sustained concentration, sound judgement and physical resilience, often while working in challenging conditions where the consequences of getting safety wrong can be significant.

In the latest edition of Safe Passage, United Kingdom Maritime Pilots Association (UKMPA) Chairman Captain Chris Hoyle discusses some of the physical and mental demands faced by marine pilots, alongside the continuing risks surrounding pilot transfer arrangements.

From fatigue, whole-body vibration and hull impact to damaged ladders, poorly secured stanchions and non-compliant transfer arrangements, the article reinforces why pilot safety requires more than simply meeting minimum standards. It requires ongoing vigilance, reporting, effective training and collaboration between pilots, ship operators, regulators and port authorities.

Chris also looks ahead to the implementation of the revised SOLAS V/23 requirements, highlighting the importance of early adoption and a proactive rather than reactive approach to improving pilot transfer safety.
