Today, AMPI was proud to be represented at the annual Seafarers Welfare Luncheon hosted by the The Mission to Seafarers Sydney at NSW Parliament House. The event brings together leaders from across the maritime community to recognise the vital contribution of seafarers and support the welfare services that assist them both at sea and in port.

AMPI is proud to support the important work of the Mission to Seafarers and the many organisations dedicated to improving the wellbeing of those who serve at sea. Thank you to the Mission team, sponsors and supporters for delivering another fantastic event and for your ongoing commitment to seafarer welfare.

That's a wrap on the AMPI Regional Ports & Pilotage Conference 2026 in Darwin.

This week, maritime professionals from across Australia, New Zealand and around the world (including Singapore, Canada, Germany, PNG and more!) came together to explore this year's theme, Human Capital in a Technical World.

From first-class presentations and panel discussions to practical workshops, networking opportunities and industry conversations, the conference highlighted the importance of people, leadership, wellbeing, professional development and collaboration in shaping the future of pilotage and port operations.

We were particularly proud to see the AMPI community come together at the Gala Dinner, raising more than $16,000 for local seafarer welfare services in Darwin, a record fundraising result for AMPI!

On behalf of AMPI, thank you to our delegates, speakers, sponsors, exhibitors and supporters for making the conference such a success. Your participation, expertise and generosity are what make this event so valuable.

Last night, the AMPI conference community came together for a fantastic Gala Dinner at the spectacular Mindil Beach Casino Resort, sponsored by our wonderful Host Port Sponsor, Darwin Port.

We are thrilled to announce that, through the incredible generosity of our delegates, sponsors and supporters, we raised more than $16,000 for seafarer welfare services in Darwin!

This is a record fundraising result for AMPI. Importantly, all funds raised will remain in Darwin to support the welfare of seafarers visiting the region.

A sincere thank you to everyone who donated prizes, purchased raffle tickets, and contributed to this outstanding outcome!

After a fantastic Welcome Event last night, proudly sponsored by Svitzer Australia, we were delighted to officially kick off the AMPI Regional Ports & Pilotage Conference in Darwin.

Delegates enjoyed a true Northern Territory experience at our Welcome Event, including a visit from some local wildlife friends (crocodiles and snakes included)!

Today, we're underway with a full house at the Darwin Convention Centre, with excellent presentations, insightful discussions, and strong engagement during the Q&A sessions.

We're now looking forward to continuing the conversations at tonight's Gala Dinner, generously sponsored by Darwin Port, at the iconic Mindil Beach Casino Resort.

Thank you to everyone who has travelled to Darwin to be part of this year's event. The energy and enthusiasm in the room has been outstanding so far.

How effective is an "effective thruster"?

In the latest edition of Safe Passage, Capt. Luke Felsinger explores a question familiar to many marine pilots: when can a tunnel thruster genuinely be considered an effective substitute for tug assistance?

Drawing on operational experience, manufacturer data, case studies and survey findings, Luke examines the gap between theoretical thruster performance and real-world capability. The article highlights the importance of reliability, sustained performance, environmental conditions and operational limitations when assessing whether a thruster can safely support a manoeuvre.

The article also introduces a practical "Thruster Assessment Form" designed to help pilots apply a more structured and consistent approach to thruster evaluation.

This is a valuable contribution to the ongoing discussion around risk management, pilot decision-making and safe port operations.

Taking place from 14–17 June, this year's conference will bring together maritime pilots, port professionals and industry stakeholders from across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region to explore the theme Human Capital in a Technical World.

Representing Australia's marine pilots in Canberra

AMPI President Josephine Clark, Deputy President Ricky Rouse and International Maritime Pilots' Association (IMPA) Vice President Adam Roberts spent the day meeting with Australian Maritime Safety Authority and the Department of Infrastructure to discuss pilotage, maritime safety, workforce development and the future of the maritime profession.

These conversations ensure the voice of marine pilots is heard on issues that affect our industry, our profession and the next generation of maritime leaders.
