Old School Winery & Meadery

Old School Winery & Meadery We’re a small winery, making distinctive, handcrafted wines and meads (honey wines) Mead (honey wine) is among the world’s oldest alcoholic drinks.

Our small, family-owned winery and meadery is located in the historic village of Womboota, NSW. As well as making distinctive, characterful handcrafted grape wines, we're passionate about the ancient art of mead-making. We were one of the first meaderies in Australia to explore and develop the potential of varietal (single-honey) meads. Our meadmaking philosophy is to combine tradition and innovat

ion, using local and regional honeys to create traditional sweet meads, lighter, contemporary-style meads, and fortified meads. Our cellar door in Womboota is open daily (except Mondays), and visitors are welcome to enjoy mead
tastings and bring a picnic or enjoy a coffee in the shade of our century-old peppercorn trees. We also sell our meads and wines at farmers’ markets, festivals, and by mail order and online. We're also part of the Backroads Trail, a touring route in southwestern NSW that takes you off the beaten track and through the farming country around Moama, Barham, Mathoura and Deniliquin, and features historical sites and farmgate produce. For more information, please see the Backroads Trail page.

We’re back to normal open hours this week (Tues-Sun 10-5pm). We were closed to human visitors during the big heatwave, but these lovely Rosella parrots and many other birds flocked to the cellar door garden to enjoy the misting sprays!

Looking for some Christmas gifts or holiday refreshments? Our new Queen Thyra Mead is now available from our cellar door. It’s sweet yet refreshing in flavour, made with honey from the very rare Kamarooka eucalypt (found only in a few locations across central Victoria and the Mallee). Continuing the Viking theme we often use for our meads, we named this delicious mead after the Viking queen Thyra of Denmark. Known as a wise, resolute and strong monarch, she’s also thought to have been the mother of legendary kings Harald Bluetooth and Canute. Not only this, but the name Thyra also has local connections, with one of the main roads to Womboota and one of Womboota’s neighbouring districts also called Thyra.
