Bit of an educational post for your thursday, For those of you who ask why your farrier will always recommend 5 weeks between shoeing cycles. No it is not about the money its the fact that the nails that hold your horses shoes on only have a short life span they are quiet a small part of the job but hold a very important roll, Over the constant stress and use over the 5 week rotation. They loose their strength from natural expansion and contraction in the horses foot, Environmental factors such as wet and dry weather and metal on metal contact in the nail hole itself. When horses are left longer then recommended this is what is at risk all nails shearing at the nail heads resulting in lost shoes, unfortunately its not something that you want laying around in the paddock either. I have seen too many posts of injurys occurring from old shoes that havent been found and lets face it horses will find any excuse to get a holiday π€¦ββοΈ
Our jobs as farriers are to keep your horses feet happy and healthy which is how they should look when we return to re shoe your horse, Just because they look great does not mean they should be pushed to their limits.
This is just a post to show the importance of keeping your horses on a regular rotation.
