Michael Kelly has always had a passion for the land, being from a fourth generation farming family. He was introduced to vineyards and wineries by the late Dr John Middleton of Mount Mary Vineyard in the Yarra Valley. Having graduated with a degree in wine science from Charles Sturt University, Michael has won a number of Australian and international awards at Fermoy Estate, Margaret River. Prior
to that he was employed at Mount Mary and Seville Estate in Victoria, Leeuwin Estate and Sandalford in Western Australia and Domaine Louis Chapuis in Burgundy, France, as well as consulting in Tuscany, Italy. Michael is a hands-on wine man, whether out in the vineyard pruning vines, working a little alchemy in the winery or pulling up a chair to talk to customers. Being a wine grower, producer and marketer, with more than 30 years in the industry he enjoys the challenge and loves what he does. He has always considered his job as his hobby. Over the past 12 years the Kelly family have developed a Caves Road, Margaret River vineyard and olive grove, and has now decided it is time to release their own label, Della Fay. Named in honour of the matriarch of the Kelly family, the range of wines includes Italian varietals nebbiolo and vermentino in addition to traditional varietals cabernet sauvignon, merlot and chardonnay. Shiraz fruit sourced from the Geographe region is part of the selection too. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is also produced under the Della Fay label. Varieties grown are WA Mission, correggiola, leccino, frantoio, ascolana and also kalamata for table olive production. Wines and oil are available by mail order.
