After their first detection in the 1940s, fire ants spread rapidly across the United States (US) at an average rate of 50 km per year. The US abandoned its eradication efforts in 1978, and fire ants have since continued to spread across 15 US states.

By comparison, in Australia, the infestation has moved slowly – at approximately 5 km per year – thanks to the eradication efforts by our program since fire ants were first detected in 2001. To date, we have successfully eradicated 8 fire ant incursions in Australia and have prevented their rapid spread.

Eradication is still possible in Australia. With the support of the community, industry, and all levels of government, we can – and will – eradicate fire ants from Australia. This will protect our health, environment, economy, and outdoor way of life – now and for generations to come. 🚫🔥🐜

⚠️ Beware of businesses claiming their services can replace the official eradication treatment provided by our program. We are not affiliated with any private company or individual offering fire ant treatment.

If you live in the eradication treatment area, your property will receive multiple rounds of treatment over several years, regardless of any prior services by private businesses or individuals. For eradication success, treatment must be coordinated and carried out only by authorised biosecurity officers. You must report fire ants and cannot self-treat, hire pest managers, or use other alternative treatment methods in place of the eradication treatment provided by our biosecurity officers.

If you live in the suppression treatment area and awaiting program eradication treatment, you have various self-treatment options. You can use products provided by our program, purchase products from local hardware stores, or hire a pest manager. It’s crucial to report any nests you find and treat on your property.
