How Does the Portwest Respiratory Protection Range Protect Against Silica Dust?
The respiratory protection marketplace has been dominated by asbestos for the last 30 years. However, in recent years crystalline silica dust has become a more prominent risk. One of the reasons why this risk has developed is due to the affordability and popularity of tools like Stihl saws.
What is the risk?
Silica is a dust-like substance found in most rocks along with many materials used in the construction industry like concrete and bricks. When materials like these are cut, drilled, or polished, dust is generated, some of this dust is fine enough that it can be inhaled deep into the lungs, this substance is known as crystalline silica dust. This extremely fine substance can cause serious damage to lungs in the same way that asbestos can, while prolonged exposure can lead to further health issues like silicosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The HSE estimates show that over 500 construction workers died in 2005 from health complications related to RCS. While approximately 4000 deaths occur annually relating to COPD and previous exposures, again, members of the construction industry make up a large percentage of those most at risk.
One of the most alarming parts of this risk is the amount of crystalline silica dust that’s needed to cause damage. The maximum amount of this dust that should be inhaled when using the correct controls and procedures is less than half the size of a penny.
