The most common infant sleep-related problem reported by parents is nighttime waking. Parents lose the most sleep during the first three months with a new baby! 👶🏻

Newborns sleep during the day and night. They don’t know that people sleep at night. The parts of their brains that control day-night sleep cycles haven’t matured yet. 😴

At the end of each cycle, newborns wake up for a little while. When they wake, they might grizzle or cry. If your baby wakes at the end of a sleep cycle, you might need to help baby settle for the next sleep cycle. 🤱🏻

A sleep association is something your little one associates with falling asleep. It might be a dummy, white noise, rocking, feeding, a comforter or even a parent’s presence.

We actually all have sleep associations. Many adults sleep better with a favourite pillow, a certain room temperature or the sound of a fan.

The goal isn’t to remove every sleep association, it’s about understanding which ones are working for your family and which ones might be making sleep more challenging.

Remember that every little person is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. 💙

Signs your little one may be getting enough sleep can include waking relatively happy, having good energy throughout the day, coping well with age-appropriate activities and settling without becoming excessively overtired.

Every little person is different, which is why looking at the whole picture is often more helpful than comparing your little one’s sleep to someone else’s. 👶🏼

Many little ones go through phases of resisting naps, but that doesn’t always mean they no longer need the sleep.

If your toddler is becoming emotional in the afternoon, waking overnight or struggling towards the end of the day, they may still benefit from a daytime nap.

Every little one is different, and sleep needs can change gradually over time. 💛

It’s easy to second guess yourself when you’re tired, overwhelmed or comparing your journey to everyone else.

Trust yourself. You know your little one better than anyone else.

And if you need a little extra support along the way, that’s okay too.

Remember; be wiser, kinder, stronger.
