The First Application of Digital Technologies in Azerbaijani Archaeology
At a meeting held on February 11, 2026, chaired by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, important decisions were made that defined the country's digital future. In accordance with the priorities established at the meeting, the "Action Plan for Accelerating the Digital Development of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2026-2028" was approved. On June 29, the first meeting of the Digital Development Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan was held, chaired by First Vice-President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva.
Organized by the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and the State Service for the Protection, Development, and Restoration of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Keshikchidag State Historical and Cultural Reserve held a theoretical and practical training for invited participants from Turkey on processing 3D images of monuments and excavation sites in various directions and creating 3D images of finds using LiDAR technology. Thus, the four-day theoretical and practical training on "Digital Architectural Images and Documentation Methods" was successfully completed.
In addition to young staff from the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the National Academy of Sciences Azerbaijan the training was attended by staff from the Archaeology and Ethnography Department of the Sheki Regional Scientific Center of the National Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan.
It should be noted that the training utilized new equipment acquired by the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan through procurement.
