What was your favourite part of the book?

When I chose to pursue a career in tourism, you will recall that many persons scoffed at the idea. Some could not envisage a young woman going beyond being a hotel receptionist. Such was the limited understanding of the broad scope of tourism at the time from a career perspective. However, by conducting my own research to find out for myself, I came to know better, which helped me to persist in my field of choice.

With faith in God, belief in myself and the adoption of a winning mindset, I was led, in the first instance, to supporting the growth and development of small hotels which many then treated with scorn, but where I saw a real opportunity

Celebrating the man who inspired it all.

“Barbados was brimming with hope and excitement during the late 1960s. On November 30, 1966, the island had gained its sovereign independence from Britain and an ambitious nation-building project was starting to take shape.

At the dining table, Mr. Barrow was informally outlining for “Tantie” his vision for the social and economic transformation and modernization of the island. He identified tourism as a central plank in this modernization thrust and I was privileged to be in the know, even if unbeknown to the invited guests.”

That is the first piece of advice I would offer to any young person contemplating the world of work, not only in tourism, but in any field of endeavour. Too often, young people choose careers not because they are passionate about the particular field, but simply to please a parent or to gain societal approval.

In many cases, they end up unhappy because they are doing something which was not of their own choosing.
