Have you heard about the burning of Mr Harding? Typically he was a masquerade entity that ended the Crop Over festivities on plantations and this tradition was retained in the modern Crop Over Festival. It was included in 1974 and even took place in 1978 at the Garrison Savannah in St. Michael.

However, it was eventually discontinued due to what was regarded as ‘lawless behaviour’. In the 1980s, a decision was made to replace the tradition with an attractive firework display at Brandon’s beach for public safety.

If you are interested in learning more about the Crop Over Festival pick up a copy of the 2021 Journal of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society when we reopen on Wednesday, August 3rd. This Did You Know segment has been adapted by ‘The Crop Over Festival’ by Allison O Ramsay.

Happy Crop Over weekend everyone!

History was made on Barbados' 55th Independence when Her Excellency The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason became the first Native President of Barbados and Superstar Robyn 'Rihanna' Fenty became the 11th National Hero of Barbados. This was indeed a moment of National pride for Barbados as we became one of the islands in the Caribbean to become a Republic
