Bangladesh's Poultry Industry Under Pressure as Farmers Face Heavy Losses
Bangladesh's poultry industry has been struggling with a prolonged egg price crisis. Thousands of egg farmers have been forced to sell eggs below their production cost, pushing many farms into severe financial losses.
According to farmers, the production cost of one egg is around BDT 9–10, but for an extended period many were forced to sell eggs for only BDT 6.5–7 each. Losing BDT 2–3 per egg has forced many small and medium-sized farms to reduce production or shut down completely.
Farmers say:
"We are not asking for high profits. We only want a fair price that covers our production costs."
Industry experts warn that if these losses continue, more farms will close, leading to lower egg production and possible supply shortages in the future. This could eventually result in higher prices for consumers.
Representatives of the poultry sector are calling for urgent action to ensure fair pricing, greater market transparency, and policies that protect farmers and support the long-term sustainability of Bangladesh's poultry industry.
