Bangladesh’s Booming Ship Breaking Industry

Three South Asian hubs, Sitakunda in Bangladesh, Alang in India and Gadani in Pakistan, scrap and recycle about 70% of the world’s old ships.

According to MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute), Bangladesh alone accounts for more than 45% of the world’s ship scrapping and recycling.

The country's steel industry produces 5-6 million tons of scrap steel annually, meeting over 60% of local steel demand.

The sector contributes about USD 2.1 billion to the economy and supports hundreds of thousands of jobs.
