Before the Sun rises on August 12, step outside and look up. Six planets will be spread across the sky at once.

Mars and Saturn are the easy ones, both bright enough to catch with the naked eye. Mercury sits low near the eastern horizon, with Jupiter even lower, both requiring a clear, unobstructed view and good timing. The two ice giants, Uranus and Neptune, complete the lineup but hide from the unaided eye: Uranus needs binoculars, Neptune a telescope.

Only Venus is missing from the morning group, and not because it's hidden. Venus is actually at its best right now, blazing as the Evening Star in the western sky after sunset. It simply sits on the opposite side of the sky from the dawn planets.

🔭 Don't expect a neat straight line. The planets trace a wide arc along the ecliptic, the plane of our solar system, stretching from the eastern horizon across the sky. Look about 45 to 60 minutes before sunrise, facing east and sweeping toward the southwest (northwest in the Southern Hemisphere).

Start early, while the sky is still dark enough for the faint planets, then watch the bright ones emerge as dawn breaks. Seeing even three or four with your own eyes is a real reward.

For the first time in 27 years, the Moon's shadow will fall across mainland Europe.

On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse sweeps from Arctic Russia over Greenland and Iceland, then down into northern Spain. Along the narrow centre line, the Sun disappears completely for up to 2 minutes and 18 seconds, unveiling its glowing corona. In Spain, this dramatic moment arrives near sunset, with the blackened Sun hanging low over the horizon. Beyond the path, a partial eclipse spans much of North America, Europe, and northwestern Africa.

⚠️ Certified eclipse glasses are essential except during the brief seconds of totality. If you can reach the path, go. Standing in the Moon's shadow is unforgettable 🌑☀️

This celestial butterfly might appear serene, but its “wings” are actually roiling cauldrons of gas heated to more than 36,000°F, spreading across space at more than 600,000 mph. You'd be able to go from Earth to the Moon in 24 minutes at that speed!

Thanks to our IXPE telescope, there’s now strong evidence to support a 90-year-old quantum theory!

This effect, called vacuum birefringence, suggests that the vacuum of space can be altered by extreme magnetic fields, far stronger than ones humans can create on Earth. Researchers used IXPE and other telescopes to study a source of such fields — a supermagnetized stellar remnant called 1E 1547-5408.

IXPE's ability to detect the polarization of X-rays, a property of light rarely measured in space, was essential to test the theory, as it gave scientists unprecedented measurements of the magnetic fields around the neutron star. The higher-than-expected level of polarization they found points to vacuum birefringence. Future observations of 1E 1547-5408 and similar sources could help us learn more about quantum theory.
