Supermarkets will be plastic bag free from October 1st, 2024!
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, the adviser for environment, forest, and climate change in the interim government, announced that from October 1, supermarkets will be prohibited from using or distributing plastic and polypropylene shopping bags. Instead, jute and cloth bags will need to be available for purchase in these stores or at their entrances. This decision was revealed during a meeting held today in the ministry’s conference room at the Secretariat, where various stakeholders gathered to discuss the development of an action plan for enforcing the plastic bag ban.
This decision echoes the concerns raised by Syeda Rizwana Hasan, during a TV talk-show organized by Insights on behalf of the Dhaka Calling Consortium on 24th March of this year, highlighting the necessity of tackling single-use plastics through both consumer behavior changes and government action.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Syeda Rizwana Hasan for leading this significant environmental initiative.
