Sweet potatoes are not botanically related to potatoes despite the similar name, taste, and starchy texture. Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) belongs to the morning glory family (Convolvulaceae), while the common potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
This means they evolved from entirely different plant lineages and are not close relatives. The term “sweet potato” is therefore a naming coincidence rather than a botanical connection, even though both are widely used as staple carbohydrate-rich foods around the world.
