Talk about something you’ve realized during this lockdown and how you’ve taken a step to make a change!
Special thanks to Keto Bhai

You can’t pour from an empty cup so love yourself first to love others. Our emotions should not define us, as it is only a reflection of our current state mind. Just like Osho said, the mind is a beautiful servant but a dangerous master.

Architects of Change (AOC) Initiative - Men Standing Up for Violence Against Women & Girls

In 2009, AOC started its journey with a unique initiative which looked at the problem of violence against women and girls in Bangladesh from a different angle; by using an inside out approach. We asked burning questions like “Why does violence against women and girls take place?” “What needs to be done to creative effective behavior change?” “Who is doing the violence?” “What are the ways we can address the problem?”
Architects of Change (AOC) initiated dialogues and open discussion during the event so that we can get a unique angle of looking at the problem. We found out that although most violence against women is done by men, not all men do this. There are men in the society who take stance to address the problem of gender equality and violence against women. Therefore, this initiative encouraged men to take stance and also requested men to sensitize other men about violence against women and girls in the name of harmful cultural practices.

There were some unique aspects about this initiative which are discussed below:

• In-depth interview with a woman who faced extreme violence (acid victim). We listened to her story, her inner voice and what makes her feel afraid.
• In-depth interview with a girl who mustered the courage to stand up against dowry on her wedding day, she eventually filed a divorce over the matter. This same girl’s story was also covered by BBC as well under their series “Shortest Marriage”
• Discussion with a man who took an initiative to sensitize other men to stop gender inequality and violence against girls and women.

The event also featured an interactive stage drama called “All the Scars Inside Her”. The current Education Minister and Ex. Foreign Minister (2009-2013) of Bangladesh, Honorable Ms. Dipu Moni was also present at the event as the Chief Guest. The event was held in International School Dhaka (ISD) auditorium.

Architects of Change (AOC) - Say KNOW to Drugs

This was one of our earlier initiatives way back in 2009 where we unlocked resources from the private sector (BRAC Bank) and ALO (Local NGO) for creating awareness against drugs. The initiative also focused on the importance of mental health in order to lead a stress free life that is free from all sorts of addictions. The event took an inside out approach of looking at the problem. The root problem of drug addiction is the lack communication between parents and children. Moreover, due to this communication gap, many youngsters get derailed. AOC initiated dialogue between parents and students during the event and this inter-generation conversation approach brought the problem into light from both student’s and parent’s perspective.

The initiative was called “Say KNOW to drugs” which means, it is important to know about harmful drugs and its side-effects. Most youngsters are unaware of the heinous consequences of drug addiction and through this event we tried to share knowledge and create awareness. The event also included a drama which focused on the harmful effects of drug addiction on the mind and the body; the drama was called “Confessions of a Confused Mind”.
The purpose of the workshop was capacity development of the participants as we created awareness about drug addiction, allowed participants to self-reflect and understand the importance of taking care of their mental health. We also discussed aspects like meditation and mindfulness, which are key to unlocking the power of the mind and improving mental health.

Through this unique initiative AOC advocated for schools to offer more robust counselling services and develop support groups to tackle mental health related problems. Late Brother Ronald Drahozal who is the founder of APON (Ashokti Punarbashan Nibash); a residence for recovering addicts; also appeared as a chief guest during the event. The event was sponsored by ALO and supported by BRAC Bank.

In 2016, Architects of Change (AOC) held workshop with IUB lecturers and the main objective was to change the mind-set of teaching. We discussed about the importance of empathy and emotional intelligence. The workshop also stressed on the importance of bridging gap between students and lecturers to improve the quality of teaching. Discussions were held on understanding limitations of students, their varying needs, identifying strengths and taking more initiatives to unleash their potential. Furthermore, faculties discussed various methods of communication to encourage students to share their limitations and communicate with faculties more effectively. There were also discussions on various initiatives which can be taken for capacity development of students and faculties in terms of mental held; one of the fruitful discussions was to develop para-counselors as part of the social support system inside the universities which will help students to excel in their studies and in their personal lives.
