This week, Mesopartner and EDGE is running a one-week training in Yangon on Market Systems (MSD) and Local Economic Development (LED). The training covers topics like how markets work, how change happens in economies, how institutions shape economies, how localities are structured and how local change processes can be designed. The participants can choose whether they want to put an emphasis on MSD or LED.

Thirty-two people are participating in the training event. The participants are coming from 5 countries and represent 9 organisations.

EDGE has been working with Prabriddhi project of Swisscontact to analyze and understand the Local Economic Development (LED) context of Shibganj Municipality in Chapainawabganj. Local Economic Development (LED) is a relatively new model in Bangladesh (but it has been around for a while in other places) signals the drive for rooting employment creation by building on the comparative advantages and the unique characteristics of localities.

EDGE and Mesopartner will be organizing a training program on Introduction to Market System Development and Local Economic Development from 3-7th June, 2019 in Yangon, Myanmar.

This training will provide a comprehensive introduction to the two approaches, drawing from both theory and many years of implementation experience. Participants will be able to choose a focus on either MSD or LED during the training, depending on their specific requirements.

SPRING Accelerator, bootcamp 2 comes to an end. 19 Businesses that went out of Bootcamp 1 earlier this year with Human Centered Design tools and techniques to develop a research prototype were back at the picturesque Hattiban resort in Nepal. The businesses went through their research findings that helped them to tweak their prototypes or as some of them
have pointed out “pissed” on their original prototype or hypothesis. The SPRING and Fuse Project team facilitated the businesses to realize their “aha” and “Oh Sh*t!” moments and identify the Girl Impact. The designers from the Fuse team helped the businesses with their digital and branding assets while SPRING team also worked on the investment readiness of these businesses. All the businesses came out of BC2 with a prototype which they will now implement in the market with technical and financial support from SPRING. The Cohort 4 businesses were selected from Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Pakistan. EDGE Consulting has been managing SPRING Accelerator in Bangladesh.

The past two weeks have been really exciting with 20 businesses from Nepal, Bangladesh,Myanmar and Pakistan coming together at Bootcamp 1 of SPRING Accelerator at a beautiful resort in Kathmandu. The businesses had to go through Human Centered Design process, building prototypes, research questions so that they can test business models that can create more impact for the adolescent girls in their respective countries. They also had the chance to meet and discuss with investors, donor groups and was facilitated by the Fuse Project and SPRING Consortium. EDGE is a member of the SPRING Consortium.

Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) develops a manual on Cultivation of Maize in the Summer (Kharif-1) season

Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) with the support of Katalyst and EDGE Consulting Ltd, developed a manual on effective cultivation methods of maize in the summer (Kharif-1) season, by extracting technical content from existing research works and successful practices. Maize is an important cash crop for the farmers in Bangladesh and maize cultivation in summer season is pivotal in order to lessen the country’s reliance on imported maize. Hence the development of such a manual was considered essential by BARI since protocol of maize cultivation in winter has been well established, while similar protocol for summer maize does not exist. The manual was developed with the technical inputs of nine relevant departments of BARI and Mr. Stephen Waddington, who is a maize expert and was the former Head of Office of CIMMYT, Bangladesh. On 6th March 2018, BARI organized a manual distribution ceremony where they shared the manual with relevant stakeholders. Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, Director General, BARI, Abu Saif Ansari, Manager-Program Implementation, Katalyst and other representatives from the organisations were present at the event.

It was a great experience to work with businesses that could eventually create meaningful impact for the adolescent girls in Bangladesh. We have 4 businesses from Bangladesh in SPRING Cohort 4! Now the next phase of the journey begins, where we take these businesses through a journey using tools and approach like Human Centered Design to develop their offer for girls, gain traction and attract investment.
