1. Choose the Right Visa
Australia has multiple work visas, but the main categories are:
Skilled visas (points-based) – for people with in-demand skills, no employer required
Example: Skilled Independent (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated (subclass 190)
Employer-sponsored visas – where an Australian employer sponsors you
Example: Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482)
Regional visas – for living/working in regional Australia
Example: Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491)
Working holiday visas – for young travelers from eligible countries
2. Check Eligibility
You’ll need to meet criteria such as:
Occupation – must be on Australia’s skilled occupation list (varies by visa)
Skills Assessment – for most skilled visas, an official authority must assess your qualifications/experience
English language – usually IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL
Health & Character – medical exam and police clearance
Age limit – most skilled visas require you to be under 45
3. Skills Assessment
Apply to the relevant Australian assessing authority for your occupation
Provide proof of qualifications, experience, and sometimes practical tests
Processing can take weeks to months
4. Expression of Interest (EOI) (for points-tested visas)
Submit your details in the SkillSelect system
Your EOI is ranked on points (age, English, experience, qualifications, etc.)
If selected, you get an Invitation to Apply for the visa
5. Get Sponsorship (if employer-sponsored)
Employer must be an approved sponsor
They lodge a nomination for your role
You apply for the visa once the nomination is approved
