♻️ DOWNTIME – The 8 Hidden Wastes That Drain Efficiency
In Lean Manufacturing, DOWNTIME is not about machine breakdowns — it’s an acronym representing the 8 types of waste that silently reduce productivity, quality, and profit.
Let’s break it down 👇
🔹 D – Defects:
Rework, scrap, or errors that require correction — wasting time, material, and effort.
🔹 O – Overproduction:
Making more than what’s needed or before it’s needed. It hides other inefficiencies.
🔹 W – Waiting:
Idle time when people or machines are waiting for materials, approvals, or information.
🔹 N – Non-Utilized Talent:
Underusing people’s skills, creativity, or ideas. The most overlooked waste!
🔹 T – Transportation:
Unnecessary movement of materials or products between processes. Adds no value.
🔹 I – Inventory:
Excess raw material or WIP tying up cash and space without immediate need.
🔹 M – Motion:
Unnecessary movement of people or equipment — walking, searching, or bending.
🔹 E – Excess Processing:
Doing more work than required — over-polishing, redundant steps, or extra approvals.

💡 Eliminating DOWNTIME = Boosting Efficiency
By identifying and minimizing these wastes, organizations can improve flow, reduce costs, and enhance value to the customer.
🧠 Continuous Improvement starts with awareness — spot the waste, eliminate the waste!
