🌱 Waste Is Not a Burden, But a Resource and Source of Energy

The seminar titled “Municipal Waste Management in Bangladesh: Challenges and a Roadmap for Sustainable Solutions” was held on 9 August 2026 at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Miah Hall of the National Press Club, Dhaka.

The keynote paper was presented by Dr. Nasir Uddin Khan, Waste Management Specialist and Life Member of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA). He highlighted that Bangladesh’s existing waste management system remains largely dependent on “Collect → Transport → Dump”, and emphasized the need to shift towards an integrated “Segregate → Treat → Recover” approach.

Dr. Khan stressed that waste should no longer be treated simply as a burden. Instead, it should be transformed into resources, energy, and economic opportunities for Bangladesh. Considering the country’s waste characteristics, particularly its high organic content and moisture levels, Biogas and RDF were identified as highly suitable technologies for Bangladesh.

The proposed integrated system focuses on converting organic waste into biogas and compost, combustible waste into Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF), and recovering valuable recyclable materials. Such an approach can reduce waste management pressures while creating opportunities for alternative fuel, green jobs, resource recovery, and economic benefits.

The seminar was attended by Prof. Firoz Ahmed, Water Scientist and Vice President of BAPA; Shubho Kibria, Chief Researcher of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB); Nur Azizur Rahman, Chief Engineer of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC); and Arifur Rahman, Additional Chief Waste Management Officer of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), among others.

The seminar was chaired by Dr. Nur Mohammad Talukder, President of BAPA, and moderated by Alamgir Kabir, General Secretary of BAPA. The welcome address was delivered by Mahidul Haque Khan, Vice President of BAPA. Other members of the central and national committees were also present.

“Municipal Waste Management in Bangladesh: Challenges and a Roadmap for Sustainable Solutions” শীর্ষক সেমিনার অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে ৯ আগস্ট ২০২৬, জাতীয় প্রেসক্লাবের তফাজ্জল হোসেন মানিক মিয়া হলে।

সেমিনারে মূল প্রবন্ধ উপস্থাপন করেন বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা বিশেষজ্ঞ ও বাপার আজীবন সদস্য ড. নাসির উদ্দীন খান। তিনি বাংলাদেশের প্রচলিত “Collect → Transport → Dump” নির্ভর বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা ব্যবস্থা থেকে বেরিয়ে “Segregate → Treat → Recover” ভিত্তিক সমন্বিত ও টেকসই ব্যবস্থায় রূপান্তরের ওপর গুরুত্বারোপ করেন।

তিনি বলেন, বর্জ্যকে আর বোঝা হিসেবে নয়, বরং সম্পদ, জ্বালানি ও অর্থনৈতিক সুযোগে রূপান্তর করতে হবে। বাংলাদেশের বাস্তবতা, উচ্চমাত্রার জৈব বর্জ্য ও আর্দ্রতা বিবেচনায় Biogas ও RDF প্রযুক্তিকে বিশেষভাবে উপযোগী হিসেবে উল্লেখ করা হয়।
প্রস্তাবিত ব্যবস্থায় জৈব বর্জ্য থেকে Biogas/Compost, দাহ্য বর্জ্য থেকে RDF এবং পুনর্ব্যবহারযোগ্য বর্জ্য থেকে মূল্যবান উপকরণ পুনরুদ্ধারের মাধ্যমে একদিকে বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনার চাপ কমানো, অন্যদিকে বিকল্প জ্বালানি, কর্মসংস্থান ও অর্থনৈতিক সুযোগ সৃষ্টি করার সম্ভাবনার কথা তুলে ধরা হয়।

সেমিনারে পানি বিজ্ঞানী ও বাপার সহ-সভাপতি অধ্যাপক ফিরোজ আহমেদ, ক্যাবের প্রধান গবেষক শুভ কিবরিয়া, ডিএসসিসির প্রধান প্রকৌশলী নূর আজিজুর রহমান, ডিএনসিসির অতিরিক্ত প্রধান বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা কর্মকর্তা আরিফুর রহমানসহ সংশ্লিষ্ট বিশেষজ্ঞ ও পরিবেশকর্মীরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

বাপা সভাপতি ড. নুর মোহাম্মদ তালুকদারের সভাপতিত্বে সেমিনারটি সঞ্চালনা করেন সংগঠনের সাধারণ সম্পাদক আলমগীর কবির। অনুষ্ঠানে স্বাগত বক্তব্য দেন বাপার সহ-সভাপতি মহিদুল হক খান।
