Scientists Just Turned Lead into Gold!
Scientists working at a giant underground science lab called CERN have actually done something people thought was impossible: they turned lead into gold.
They did this using a massive machine called the Large Hadron Collider, which shoots tiny pieces of atoms down a long tunnel. Instead of smashing two pieces of lead directly into each other, they zipped them past each other at nearly the speed of light.
As they flew past, a super-powerful flash of light blasted away exactly three tiny particles (called protons) from the lead. Since lead has 82 protons and gold has 79, losing those three particles instantly turned the lead into real gold!
But don't worry, the scientists aren't going to become billionaires. Over three whole years, they only made a tiny, microscopic amount—less than one-trillionth of a single gram! Plus, the gold flew so fast that it instantly smashed into the walls and disappeared.
Instead of making money, the scientists are just super excited because this trick helps them understand what the universe looked like right after it was born!
