Sirajganj Economic Zone: A New Horizon for Industrialization, Investment & Employment
The proposed Tetulia–Matarbari Economic Corridor by the Asian Development Bank is set to become a transformative economic initiative for Bangladesh. Stretching from the northern region to the southeastern coast, this corridor will enhance connectivity while creating new opportunities in industry, logistics, export trade, agro-processing, energy, and modern urban development.
Within this corridor, the Sirajganj Economic Zone is emerging as a strategically important hub. Due to its location near the Jamuna River, the two Bridges, and the gateway to northern Bangladesh, Sirajganj has strong potential to become one of the country’s leading industrial and commercial centers.
The corridor will strengthen economic links between northern Bangladesh, Dhaka, and the Matarbari deep seaport, enabling faster import of raw materials, industrial production, and export to international markets. As a result, Sirajganj can develop into a central logistics and manufacturing platform.
Key sectors with strong growth potential include:
Agro-processing and food industries
Textile and garment backward linkage industries
Logistics, warehousing, and cold-chain infrastructure Export-oriented manufacturing industries Renewable energy and green industries
The project is also expected to attract significant domestic and foreign investment, particularly from Japan, China, South Korea, India, Singapore, and the Middle East. Improved transport, rail, power, and port connectivity will encourage foreign direct investment (FDI), joint ventures, and multinational industrial participation.
Most importantly, the corridor will create large-scale employment opportunities in manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, and entrepreneurship, while supporting youth and women’s employment, technical education, and regional economic development.
With its strategic geographic position and integration into the Tetulia–Matarbari Economic Corridor, the Sirajganj Economic Zone has the potential to become a new economic gateway of Bangladesh and a model for integrated industrial urbanization.
