Most people think keyword research is about finding high-volume keywords.

That’s where they go wrong. Because in reality, keyword research is not about traffic. It’s about intent.

I’ve worked on multiple projects where websites were targeting keywords with thousands of searches but still getting zero conversions.

Then I changed one thing. Instead of chasing volume, I focused on: Low-competition + high-intent keywords. And the results were completely different.

Here’s what I learned from real keyword research projects:

1. Search volume doesn’t equal value

A keyword with 10,000 searches can bring less value than a keyword with 100 searches.

Why?

Because high-volume keywords are usually:
• Highly competitive
• Broad intent
• Hard to rank

But low-volume keywords often have:
• Clear intent
• Less competition
• Higher conversion potential

2. Intent is everything

There are 4 types of search intent:
• Informational
• Navigational
• Commercial
• Transactional

If your content doesn’t match intent, it will not rank or convert.

For example:
“Best SEO tools” → Commercial intent.
“Buy SEO tools” → Transactional intent.

Different intent = different content strategy.

3. Keyword clustering is the real game

Instead of targeting one keyword per page, I use keyword clustering.

This allows:
• Better topical authority
• Strong internal linking
• Higher ranking chances

Example:
Main keyword: “Keyword research tools.”

Cluster keywords:
• Free keyword research tools
• Best keyword tools for SEO
• Keyword tools for beginners

All connected under one content strategy.

4. Competitor analysis reveals everything

Most people skip this step but competitors already show:
• What works
• What ranks
• What content structure performs
