Strange but true?
London, 1994. National Theater Studio.
Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz were cast as lovers in Les Grandes Horizontales, a production about 19th-century courtesans.
They were both in their twenties. Both rising British actors trying to catch a break. Both unknown.
According to the play's historical consultant, their roles involved "a number of amorous clinches and there was a lot of faked sexual congress and 'tasteful' nudity."
But offstage, there was nothing.
Daniel was already married to Scottish actress Fiona Loudon. They had a daughter, Ella, born in 1992.
Rachel was focused on her career.
When the production wrapped, they went their separate ways. Friendly colleagues. Nothing more.
"Neither of them were famous then," the consultant later recalled, "so their first meeting went unrecorded."
For sixteen years, their lives followed parallel tracks.
Daniel's marriage to Fiona ended in 1994. He dated German actress Heike Makatsch for seven years. Later, he got engaged to producer Satsuki Mitchell.
Meanwhile, he became James Bond—cast in 2005's Casino Royale, instantly catapulting to global fame.
Rachel's career exploded too. The Mummy in 1999. The Constant Gardener in 2005, which won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
She fell in love with filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. They got engaged. In 2006, they had a son, Henry.
Rachel had never been interested in marriage. "It was not an ambition of mine," she'd later say. "It was the opposite."
But in 2010, everything changed.
Rachel and Darren split. Daniel and Satsuki ended their engagement.

They played a married couple.
The producer, Ehren Kruger, would later joke: "There is method acting and I guess there is matrimonial method acting. They were playing the roles as professional, and it went from there."
By December 2010, paparazzi spotted them walking hand-in-hand through the snowy Dorset countryside in southwestern England.
They were "laughing and chatting and hanging on to each other's words," witnesses reported.
They spent Christmas together that year.
In February 2011, they were photographed on a Valentine's Day date in New York City.
And then, in June 2011—just six months after they'd started dating—Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz got married.
In secret.
In New York.
With four people present.
Daniel's daughter, Ella. Rachel's son, Henry. And two friends.
No press. No photos. No fanfare.
"We did it privately," Daniel later told a reporter in 2015, "and we've got a lot of people to thank for that. But that was the point; we did it for private reasons because we didn't want it fu**ed up, because that would be sharing a secret. And the whole point is that it was a secret. A secret is a secret in my mind."
Rachel, who'd spent years saying she'd never marry, had changed her mind.
"I never thought I would get married," she told an interviewer in 2018. "It was not an ambition of mine. It was the opposite. I couldn't relate to romantic comedies—marriage seems to be the whole point of them. Then I just met someone and I wanted to marry him."
A few weeks after the wedding, they made their first public appearance as a married couple at a screening of The Whistleblower.
At the afterparty, Daniel "embraced Rachel and gave her a long tender kiss on the lips," a witness recalled.
And then they disappeared.
Well, not literally. But as much as two A-list actors can disappear.
They stopped talking about their relationship in interviews. They rarely appeared together on red carpets. They built a life that was deliberately, fiercely private.
"I'm in love. I'm very happy. And that is as far as I'm prepared to go," Daniel told a reporter in 2012. "My happiness is more important to me."
Rachel was even more blunt in a 2016 interview about why she doesn't discuss her marriage publicly.
"He's just too famous. It would be a betrayal. You have to protect your marriage… When you're young, you tell your girlfriends everything. One of the great pleasures of not being an adolescent is that you don't have to share everything. When you're married, that door closes. The audience goes, and you're in your own life."
In 2013, they worked together again—both appearing on Broadway in Harold Pinter's Betrayal, playing married couple Emma and Robert.
In 2014, they accepted an award together for their charity work, which helps underrepresented students gain access to college and career opportunities.
"It's really lovely," Rachel said of working with her husband. "It's something that was incredibly natural and obvious to us."
In September 2018, they welcomed a daughter together.
They've never revealed her name. They've never shared photos. They guard her privacy as fiercely as they guard their own.
At the 2025 Golden Globes, Daniel showed up alone. When asked why Rachel wasn't there, he said simply: "She's getting our little one back in school."
Their daughter was seven years old. Still being shielded from the spotlight.
Daniel also has Ella, now in her thirties and an actress herself. Rachel has Henry, now in his late teens.

Rachel wore a glittering Versace gown. Daniel sported longer hair. They looked happy.

They met in 1994, playing lovers onstage when neither was famous.
