A coastal home, without the coastal clichés.

When Marleen Heylen, part of Heylen Ceramics, was designing her own holiday home in Duinbergen with interior architect Bjorn Van Tornhaut of Sphere Concepts, ceramic materials naturally became part of the story.

Frêne Bi-Cuisson glazed brick slips by Rairies Montrieux bring rich terracotta tones to the kitchen island, worktop and splashbacks, while Crema Tivoli XLDF brick slips create a warm, tactile floor that continues visually towards the terrace.

For Marleen, it was a chance to use materials she knows inside out in a very personal setting, exploring how brick slips can move beyond the façade and become part of the interior itself.

The result? A warm and relaxed coastal home where ceramics connect colour, texture and indoor-outdoor living.

A façade that reveals more the closer you look.

For this residence in Hoogkarspel, NOMAA architecten selected the Ultima RT153 by Randers Tegl: a light-coloured, long-format Wasserstrich facing brick that gives a traditional material a distinctly contemporary expression.

Its elongated proportions emphasise the horizontal lines of the architecture and bring a sense of calm to the façade. The soft, light tone keeps the volume refined, while complementing the natural palette of thatch and timber.

But the real character lies in the surface. Thanks to the Wasserstrich production process, each brick has subtle variations in colour, texture and irregularity. From a distance, the façade reads as a quiet whole. Up close, its depth and craftsmanship reveal themselves brick by brick.

Not every architectural vision starts with an existing brick.

For the Gasthuisberg campus in Leuven, the search for the right façade material led to a custom-made ceramic solution: a light-green edelengobe brick developed specifically for the project.
It is exactly this kind of collaboration that we believe in at Heylen Ceramics. By involving material choices early in the design process, we can look beyond standard collections and explore colour, texture, finish and format together with the architect.

Sometimes the right brick already exists. Sometimes it still has to be created.

Clean lines, monumental volumes and a refined silhouette define this home in Diepenbeek. Designed by , the architecture is shaped by strong horizontal lines and carefully balanced proportions.

The elongated RT 165 façade brick reinforces that sense of width, while its soft sandy tone and textured surface introduce warmth, rhythm and subtle depth. A carefully chosen material that doesn’t simply finish the design, but helps define its entire character.

Brick is made to last, and that durability matters far beyond the façade.

From production to decades of use and eventual reuse, clay brick performs strongly across its full lifecycle. Locally produced bricks require relatively low CO₂ emissions in manufacturing, while their thermal mass can help reduce heating demand throughout a building’s lifetime.

And when a building reaches the end of its life, the story doesn’t necessarily end there. A large share of brick and ceramic material can be reused or even recycled, keeping valuable resources in circulation.

For architects, that makes brick more than an aesthetic choice, but also a sustainability one. Regional clay, durable mono-material construction, thermal performance and circular potential come together in a material designed for the long term.

Built from the earth. Made to endure.

In Hoogkarspel, Marco Jongmans of .nl architecten designed a home that feels naturally connected to its rural surroundings. Familiar materials like thatch, timber and brick were reworked into a lighter, sharper architectural language.

The façade became part of that story. Together with Denis de Haan of , the choice fell on the Ultima RT153 by Randers Tegl: a long-format brick that brings calm, horizontality and texture to the architecture.

As Denis puts it: “First you see the volume, then the bond, and only up close the texture of the brick itself.”

A façade defined by rhythm, warmth and quiet material expression.

For this residence in Diepenbeek, Studio Segers Architecten embraced the site's exceptional width with a strongly horizontal composition. The result is a monolithic home that feels closed and understated from the street, yet opens generously towards the garden, patio and covered terrace.

That same sense of calm continues in the material palette. The sand-coloured Ultima RT165 by Randers Tegl, used here for the very first time, adds subtle texture and depth while reinforcing the long architectural lines.

Ton-sur-ton joints and slightly recessed horizontal pointing make the façade read almost as one continuous surface, without losing the natural character of brick.

When the original material choice proved too dominant during ex*****on, Studio Segers Architecten and Heylen Ceramics quickly switched direction. New samples and joint proposals followed the same day, allowing the architecture, detailing and material to come together exactly as intended.

A sixties-inspired façade, brought back to life through colour and ceramics.

What started as a smaller renovation in Berchem grew into a complete transformation of this modernist townhouse by Stam architecten. The ambition was clear: preserve the character of the original building while bringing its performance and material expression up to date.

Ceramic brick slips became a key part of that balance. Lightweight, precise and well suited to renovation, they allowed more room for insulation while offering the freedom to refine the façade in detail.

Instead of returning to the original red-brown tones, Stam architecten chose two contrasting finishes by Rairies Montrieux: the glossy green Nénuphar Cristallin and the matte yellow Antares. Together, they create a playful nod to sixties modernism, while still connecting naturally to the surrounding streetscape.

Mock-ups and close collaboration between architect, client and Heylen Ceramics helped fine-tune the colour, texture and detailing, especially valuable for an application with few existing references.

A renovation built on respect for what was there, and confidence in what it could become.

Brick, timber and concrete set the tone at Rumi Antwerp.

Facing the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp’s South district, this project makes the complete building and stay come together with a ground floor designed by Studio Contekst. Shaped around food, encounters and changing experiences.

The Aurea Ravenna tiles wrap the façade, entrance, and thresholds in a warm, understated rhythm. Used in different formats and orientations, they add depth and variation without disturbing the calm character of the architecture.

Inside, timber, earth tones and exposed concrete continue the same tactile material language, creating a place that feels both refined and welcoming.

Long lines, monumental surfaces and a carefully refined silhouette.

For this residence in Diepenbeek, Studio Segers Architecten used the unusually wide site to create a strongly horizontal design. Closed and understated from the street, the home opens fully towards the garden, patio and covered terrace.

The sand-coloured Ultima RT165 by Randers Tegl reinforces that calmness. The long Wasserstrich format, natural texture and ton-sur-ton joints create a warm, monolithic façade while subtly emphasising the horizontal lines.

This project also marked the first application of the RT165. Together with Studio Segers Architecten, we helped fine-tune the brick, joint colour and detailing to bring architecture, material and ex*****on together as one.
